Modesto JC’s Cooper transfers to Kansas NAIA school for football
Modesto Junior College’s run-pass quarterback Trey Cooper will continue his football career at MidAmerica Nazarene.
Cooper, who passed for 17 touchdowns and rushed for 11 TDs last fall en route to an All-Valley Conference honor, already has moved to MidAmerica Nazarene, an NAIA school in Olathe, Kan.
Meanwhile, running back Anthony Cota – MJC’s all-time leading rusher with 2,457 yards and 30 career touchdowns in the 2013 and ’14 seasons – will play for Southwestern Oklahoma State (Division II). He redshirted in 2015 and will suit up for the Bulldogs this fall.
Cornerback Bryan Pascual, who intercepted four passes for MJC in 2015, decommitted from Delaware State (Division I FCS) and is looking elsewhere. Also undecided is linebacker Justin Van Fleet.
The rest of MJC’s transfers: receiver Ronnie Holley, Adams State (Division II); receiver Greg Tripp, Eastern Oregon (NAIA); linebacker Darien Edwards, Midland (NAIA); lineman Thomas Romero, Friends (NAIA); lineman Kevin Bolding, Friends; lineman Gabe Lopez, Kansas Wesleyan (NAIA); lineman Jesus Anguiano, Kansas Wesleyan; and lineman Kyle Dawson, Concord (Division II).
Coach Rusty Stivers said more MJC products will announce their future destinations later this year.
In other local signing news, former Modesto Christian star Anthony Brooks is listed among the signees at Alabama-Birmingham (Division I FBS). Brooks rushed for 373 yards and five touchdowns last fall for Gavilan.
