McGhee’s 3-run homer ignites Modesto JC offense
Michael McGhee’s three-run homer in the first inning ignited the Modesto Junior College offense during a 10-3 victory over Monterey Peninsula on Tuesday afternoon at the MJC diamond.
The Pirates (2-1) erupted for eight runs over the first four innings against Monterey Peninsula (1-2). A run-scoring triple by Austin Garcia, followed by an RBI single by Carlos Lino, increased the Modesto lead in the second inning.
Jacob Corn, who spent his freshman season at Oregon, made his MJC debut by giving up three hits and two home runs – one to the first batter he faced – over four innings. The win went to Brandon Scott, who struck out three in two shutout innings.
Basketball
Sacramento City men 95, MJC 64 in Sacramento – The Panthers, remembering their 69-57 loss at MJC last month, sent the Pirates to their third Big 8 Conference loss in four games.
Modesto (9-12, 3-6 Big 8) trailed 45-26 at halftime in the rematch. Zack Gonzales topped the MJC attack with 28 points, but Mason Washington – the league’s leading scorer – had only 10, along with Joe Hamilton.
Vic Rustin led Sacramento (13-10, 5-4) with 22 points. MJC travels to Sierra on Friday.
Sacramento City women 71, MJC 38 in Sacramento – The Pirates were outscored 21-2 in the third quarter of their loss to the Panthers. The Pirates (3-17, 0-9 Big 8) started fast with a 12-4 lead through five minutes before the Panthers (18-6, 6-3) – sitting in second place, two games behind Sierra – erupted for 13 three-pointers.
Freshman forward Akaysha Simpkins led Modesto with 13 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four blocked shots. Freshman guard Raquel Garcia hit four three-pointers for 12 points.
Sacramento’s Corina Tacardon netted six three-pointers en route to 24 points.
Men’s golf
MJC sixth at Stanford – MJC freshman Nick Sharp shot a 79 and tied for 10th out of a field of 78 at the Stanford Invitational. The Pirates totaled 417 strokes and placed sixth among 13 teams, 39 strokes behind first-place Folsom Lake. The tournament doubled as the Big 8 opener.
