Cal State Stanislaus stays in CCAA tie after beating UC San Diego
Christian Bayne hit a 3-pointer with six minutes left to break a 37-all tie and scored seven points down the stretch as the Cal State Stanislaus men’s basketball team beat UC San Diego 53-48 on Friday night.
Rob Walters hit all four of his free throws in the final minute – including two with 12 seconds left to give Stanislaus a 51-48 lead – as the Warriors won for the fifth time in six games.
The Warriors, coming off a big road victory last weekend against Chico State, improved to 4-1 in the California Conference Athletic Association and 7-3 overall.
They are part of a three-way tie with Sonoma State and Chico State atop the standings.
Stanislaus plays fourth-place Cal Poly Pomona (7-3, 3-2) tonight after the Broncos lost a 51-50 thriller to Chico on Friday.
Bayne, a freshman from Bakersfield, had a team-high 14 points and Wes Bartole added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, who led 20-14 at halftime.
Hunter Walker had 21 points to lead the Tritons (4-5, 2-3).
UC San Diego 81, Cal State Stanislaus 68 – Farrah Shokoor had 22 points and Jamie Katuna added 18 to lead the Tritons over the Warriors.
Camille Roberts had 18 points and Jasmine Washington and Cassidy Sanders-Curry added 11 as Stanislaus (3-6, 1-4) lost for the fifth time in six games.
UC San Diego, which led 42-34 at halftime, improved to 5-5, 3-2.
The Warriors were hurt in the free throw category. They made just 8 of 16 while UC San Diego hit 26 of 32.
