Stanislaus State continues losing streak at Cal State Monterey Bay’s Kelp Bed
The gym at Cal State Monterey Bay is called the Kelp Bed. It has not been kind to the Cal State Stanislaus women.
The Warriors were beaten by the Otters 63-59 Friday night, Stanislaus’ seventh consecutive loss at the Kelp Bed, in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. It also snapped the Warriors’ five-game winning streak.
Stanislaus (6-2, 2-1 CCAA) has not won at Monterey Bay since 2008. The Warriors shot only 32 percent from the floor and hit only 5 of 19 three-point shots. Meanwhile, the Otters (5-3, 1-1) hit 24 of 48 shots.
Taylor Faucett led Stanislaus with 12 points and Ana Burch had 10. Faucett capped a 12-0 run that put the Warriors in front 58-54 with 6:09 left. Monterey Bay answered with a game-ending 15-5 burst.
Stanislaus travels to Pacific for an exhibition game Tuesday.
Modesto JC 93, Yuba 81 in Marysville – Freshman Camille Flores poured in a school-record 41 points to lead the Pirates over the 49ers.
Flores, a freshman from Golden Valley High School who played in only her third game after volleyball season, scored 16 points in a row for Modesto (2-7) between the end of the first half and start of the second. She also was 10 for 10 from the free-throw line in the final four minutes. Flores broke the record held by Katrina Pearson, who scored 37 points against Feather River in 1992.
Modesto avenged a 72-66 loss to Yuba (4-6) last week by netting 31 of 36 free throws. Akaysha Simpkins scored 23 points and had 13 rebounds. Taylor Bachs contributed a career-high eight points and 10 rebounds. Monica Perez grabbed 15 rebounds, and Raquel Garcia scored 11 points.
Men’s basketball
Cal State Monterey Bay 86, Stanislaus State 56 – The Warriors committed 20 turnovers, made only 12 of 24 free throws and 4 of 16 three-pointers in their loss to the Otters.
Stanislaus (3-5, 2-1) never led, thanks to 38 percent shooting from the floor. It was the second year in a row the Warriors were overwhelmed at the Kelp Bed.
Christian Bayne topped the Warriors with 11 points and seven rebounds. Alek Carlson and Kyle Gouveia scored eight points apiece.
Wrestling
MJC’s Brewer places second at state in Fresno – MJC’s Luke Brewer was pinned late in the final round by Oscar Martinez of Cerritos in the 197-pound title match at the CCCAA State Championships at Fresno City College.
Brewer, a sophomore from Bret Harte High School who placed third in the state two years ago, won the NorCal title last week.
Placing fifth for the Pirates were Mark Taijeron (149) and Noor Kathem (157). Cristian Vasquez was sixth (125).
