Local Digest: Central Catholic, Los Banos girls cruise to wins in Division III tennis playoffs
Central Catholic High School’s top four singles players dominated their opponents en route to a 6-3 victory over Ceres on Tuesday that propelled the Raiders into the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III team tennis tournament.
No. 1 Payton Kelley and No. 2 Amie Ardis won with matching 6-0, 6-1 scores, while No. 3 Emma Withrow didn’t drop a game in her victory. Faith Masellis was a 6-2, 6-2 winner in the No. 4 singles match.
Central Catholic on Monday will host Pioneer of Woodland, a 5-4 winner over Central Valley.
Los Banos 6, Oakdale 3 in Los Banos – The Tigers cruised past Oakdale en route to the D-III semis. Los Banos was a winner in the first five singles matches and the No. 1 doubles contest. Freshman Shirley Liu beat Christine Kim 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 singles, and the Tigers’ top tandem of Adriana Morena and Kylee Cardoza bested Cori Barney and Lilly Fabry 6-3, 6-2.
On Monday, Los Banos will host River City, a 5-4 winner over Manteca.
Turlock 8, Stagg 1 in Turlock – The Bulldogs had little trouble with the Delta Queens in their opening match of the D-I playoffs. At No. 1 singles, Turlock’s Mila Johns dropped the first set 6-4 in her match with Claudette Careres, then came back to win the second 6-0. She trailed 5-2 in the third set, when she was forced to retire.
St. Mary’s 9, Merced 0 in Stockton – The Rams cruised into the D-I quarterfinals and will host St. Francis (Sacramento) on Monday. St. Francis defeated Gregori 8-1.
Boys Soccer
Central Valley 1, East Union 0 in Ceres – The Hawks gained a measure of revenge for their loss to East Union in the 2011 Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals, the only time in the past five seasons that Central Valley did not reach the championship contest.
Gerardo Enriquez scored the lone goal in the Division III contest, and goalie Ramon Ruiz recorded 10 saves. Bryce Lew had 12 saves for the Lancers.
The Hawks will play Pioneer (Woodland), a winner over Vista del Lago (Folsom), on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Patterson 4, Florin 0 in Patterson – Andres Herrera, Oscar Toledo and Mauricio Gallardo scored for the Tigers in a D-III victory. Patterson on Thursday will play El Camino (Sacramento), which beat Vanden (Fairfield) on penalty kicks.
