Modesto JC men, women soccer teams score victories

The Modesto Junior College women’s team scored twice in the second half to beat Diablo Valley College 2-0 on Tuesday.

Cassandra Arteaga scored in the 60th minute and Tyler Fenton added a tally 15 minutes later as the Pirates improved to 16-0-1.

“I thought we played well the entire match,” MJC coach Steve Aristotelous said. “Diablo Valley offered a lot of resistance, we stayed the course and eventually found the goals we needed.”

Arteaga converted Jaimee Rocha’s corner kick for one goal and Fenton took advantage of a played ball by a DVC defender for the other.

Elizabeth Amaya had three saves for the Pirates, who improved to 9-0-1 in the Valley Conference.

Ranked No. 1 in the state polls, MJC next plays Friday at Santa Rosa. The two teams tied 2-2 earlier this month.

MJC 3, Delta 1 in Stockton – Humberto Salcedo had two goals and an assist, and Luis Garcia played tough in the goal to lead the Pirate men past the Mustangs.

The Pirates improved to 6-7-2 overall, 2-3 in the Valley Conference.

“Our guys player their hearts out,” MJC coach Sebastian Gutierrez said.

The Pirates next play on Tuesday, when they host Santa Rosa at 4 p.m.
