Local Digest: Stanislaus soccer teams keep playoff hopes alive

Using his head, Jose Ramirez helped the Cal State Stanislaus men’s soccer team take a big step toward the postseason.

The junior from Ceres scored on a header with about four minutes left in the second overtime to lead the Warriors past Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Stadium.

The victory moves Stanislaus (6-7-3 overall, 4-4-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association) into sixth place in the conference standings heading into its regular-season finale on Thursday in Turlock against Cal State East Bay.

The conference’s top six teams advance to the playoffs. Should the Warriors win on Thursday, they’d not only clinch a postseason berth, but possibly a home game in the first round next Sunday.

Stanislaus’ Warrior Stadium will be the site of the men’s and women’s CCAA semifinals and final starting Nov. 7.

On Sunday, Larry Hernandez gave Stanislaus a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute after his shot from outside the 18-yard box found the back of the net. Dominguez Hills’ Rayane Bouarroudj scored from close range 17 minutes later to tie it.

The chippy game saw refs pull out seven yellow cards and two red cards, leading to the ejection of two players from Dominguez Hills (8-7-2, 6-3-1).

Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer – Jade Poon and Kirsten Coleman scored less than three minutes apart early in the game as the Warriors won – and scored – for the first time in five games in a 2-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Warrior Stadium.

In the 16th minute, Poon took a pass from Tina Benson and beat goalkeeper Jennifer Ackerly to give Stanislaus a 1-0 lead.

Poon’s goal was the first since a 4-2 victory over UC San Diego on Oct. 10. Since then, the Warriors suffered three 1-0 defeats and a scoreless tie.

About three minutes later, Coleman took a pass from Katelyn Nebesnick and converted for a 2-0 lead.

From there, Stanislaus goalkeeper Katie Foster did the rest, recording five saves for a shutout over a Dominguez Hills team that fell to 2-14-1, 2-8 in the CCAA.

The Warriors (12-4-1, 5-4-1) close out the regular season on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Cal State East Bay at Warrior Stadium.

To reach the CCAA tournament – Stanislaus will host the semifinals and finals in early November – the Warriors will need help heading into the final week of play.

The top six teams go, and the Warriors are in seventh place, a point behind sixth-place UC San Diego and two points behind fifth-place Sonoma State.
