Modesto JC women’s soccer team beats American River

Hours after maintaining its No. 1 ranking in the state poll, the Modesto Junior College women’s soccer team showed why its ahead of the rest.

Marissa Rouse scored two goals and Jenna Viss added one as the Pirates defeated American River College 3-1 on Friday.

MJC improved to 15-0-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the Valley Conference.

In increasing its school record 16-game unbeaten streak to start the season, the Pirates added credence to the new poll released by the California Community College Athletic Association.

The Pirates find themselves ahead of No. 2 Fresno City College (13-0-2) and No. 3 Santiago Canyon College (11-0-3).

Rouse put the Pirates up 1-0 in the fourth minute after converting an assist by Gabby Acosta. Viss scored an unassisted goal 14 minutes later and Rouse, on an assist from Haley Smithers, put MJC up 3-0 in the 40th minute.

Elizabeth Amaya had six saves for MJC, which plays Diablo Valley College at MJC on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer – The Warriors suffered their fourth straight shutout, but salvaged a 0-0 tie with visiting Cal State Los Angeles.

Since beating UC San Diego 4-2 on Oct. 10, Stanislaus, which won the California Collegiate Athletic Association title last year, lost three straight 1-0 decisions before Friday’s tie.

Cal State L.A., which outshot Stanislaus 16-8, is 8-0-1, 13-0-2.

Stanislaus (4-4-1 CCAA, 1-4-1) hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday in Turlock at 11:30 a.m.

Cal State Stanislaus volleyball – Paige Walker had eight kills and 13 digs, but the Warriors (2-12 CCAA, 2-16 overall) dropped a 25-17, 25-17, 25-23 decision to Cal State East Bay in Hayward.

The Warriors were looking for their second straight win over the Pioneers (6-13, 3-11), who were led by Amber Hall (11 kills).

Stanislaus plays at Cal State Monterey Bay tonight.

Cal State Stanislaus men’s soccer – Marvin Iskra scored on a breakaway in the 66th minute as Cal State L.A. beat the Warriors 1-0.

Stanislaus (3-4-2 CCAA, 5-7-3) managed just six shots on goal against Los Angeles (8-1, 12-2).

Modesto Racquet Club junior tennis – The Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club’s coed 18s intermediate team beat Hawaii on Friday at the National Junior Team Championships in Cayce, S.C. The team opened play Friday and continues through Sunday. Scoring victories against Hawaii were singles players Linda Erazo and Alex Alfaro, and the doubles teams of Chase Harden and Andrew Ng, Mia Maceira and Caeli Benson and Nathan Saragoza and Christine Kim.
