Unbeaten MJC women’s soccer team blanks Sacramento

Tuesday afternoon amounted to a “taking care of business” game for the unbeaten Modesto Junior College women’s soccer team.

The Pirates (14-0-1, 7-0-1), ranked No. 1 in the state, posted a 5-0 win over cellar-dwelling Sacramento City (3-9-1, 0-7), thanks in part to three goals and an assist by Yaritza Arista. MJC’s seventh win ties a school record in the Big 8 Conference.

Harleen Pabla, Jazlynn Satkamp and Marissa Rouse also scored for Modesto, which also featured Jenna Viss with two assists. Goalkeepers Elizabeth Amaya and Rylee McCown combined for the shutout.

Modesto leads Santa Rosa and Sierra by 11/2 games with six games left.

Golf

Pirates clinch title – The MJC women’s golfers, paced by Jenny Ketner’s 77, clinched their second straight Big 8 championship with a victory in the conference’s eighth tournament at Table Mountain in Oroville.

MJC shot 323, six strokes better than runner-up Sierra, and holds an insurmountable lead over Sierra with two events left.

Ketner, who posted the fifth-lowest individual score, was supported by four other teammates who shot 82. They demonstrated the depth that has again carried Modesto to the top.

“All six of our girls have shot in the 70s at least once,” MJC coach Milan Motroni said. “It works out as a team effort. Hopefully, we’ll have more in the 70s for NorCals.”

Warriors 13th – Cal State Stanislaus, ranked 12th in NCAA Division II, tied for 13th at Cal State Monterey Bay’s Otter Invitational at Bayonet/Blackhorse. The tournament featured five teams ranked in the top six, and the Warriors finished 76 strokes over par.

The Warriors’ Anthony Manguray shot a 75 and tied for 13th individually at 10 over par. The medalist was Richard Mansell of Nova Southeastern, who was 1-under for the three rounds.

“It’s a tough week for these young minds because the course played tough,” Stanislaus coach John Cook said. “Anthony did hang in there. The greens were firm and fast.”
