Pirate Weekly: MJC volleyball player Ambria Schneringer signs with D1 school
Modesto Junior College sophomore setter Ambria Schneringer (Central Catholic) recently signed a scholarship to play NCAA Division I volleyball at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff.
Schneringer was a two-time Big 8 Conference first-team selection in her two seasons (2018, 2019) at MJC.
Baseball: The Pirates won two of three against San Joaquin Delta College last week, and are tied for first place in the Big 8 with three other teams at 2-1 record (9-7 overall). Sophomore Branden Pasion (Gregori) leads the team with a .372 batting average, .473 on-base percentage, and 12 RBIs through 16 games.
MJC’s fielding percentage is ranked No. 5 in the state at .974. MJC’s catchers rank first in throwing out potential base-stealers wtih 12. Freshman Camron Mercurio (Enochs) has thrown out 11 of 19. The Pirates host American River on Thursday at 2 p.m.
Softball: MJC got its first Big 8 Conference win Saturday against then-No. 9 Sacramento City. The Pirates won the opener and lost the second game — both 3-2. The Pirates (5-8) and host Hartnell on Friday at noon.
Track: Last week, heptathletes Jessikka Gonzales (Escalon) and Talyn Steffens (Kimball) competed at the Chico Multi Classic. Competing against JC and four-year athletes, Gonzales was seventh out of 14 and achieved the State A qualifying mark in the 800 by five seconds. Her score of 3,582 ranks fourth in Northern California. Steffens (2,975) qualified for the Northern California Championships by placing 12th. She finished second in the 800 and is ranked seventh in NorCal.
Football Scholar Athletes: The following MJC football players qualified for NCFC Scholar-Athlete recognition in the Valley League. These student athletes have completed their second sport season and successfully completed a minimum of 36 units with a GPA of 3.0:

Tennis: The women’s team its first loss of the season, losing to Chabot College. The women are still undefeated in conference play and have one of the best records in NorCal 10-1 (6-0).
The next day they beat Sacramento City College 9-0 with straight set wins from Jenna Carriegan (Gregori), Rylee Garcia (Orestimba), Cynthia Hernandez (Pitman), and Erika Salidivar (Central Catholic).
The men lost a close match against Chabot 5-4, but bounced back to defeat Reedley, 9-0. They received some standout play from Max Poole (Enochs), Eli Gonzalez (Riverbank) and Michael Aposotol (Enochs).
