Pirate Weekly: MJC track and field team impresses in first meet of the season
In the team’s first meet of the season on Feb. 22 at the De Anza Invitational in Cupertino, Modesto Junior College’s track and field team picked up four victories and one state leader.
Jadyn Snaer (East Union HS) won the women’s 100-meter dash in a state-leading time of 12.17 seconds. That time also ranks eighth on MJC’s all-time list.
Jeida Lavender (Sierra HS) won the 400-meter dash (1:00:41) and teamed up with Snaer and Kaci Kuykendall (Gregori HS) and Rhiannon Genilla (Manteca HS) to win the 4x400m relay in 4:10.27.
On the men’s side, Silas Fredeen (Turlock HS) overcame two misses at his opening height to win the pole vault with a jump of 14 feet, 9 inches.
Swimming: At the Arena Ram Crush in Fresno last weekend, the Pirates’ men’s team finished in sixth while the women’s team finished in seventh. Levi Burch (Downey HS) placed second in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke.
Christine Berry (Beyer HS) won the 1,650-yard race.
Baseball: MJC’s baseball team improved to 8-6 on Tuesday after defeating San Joaquin Delta College in the Big 8 Conference opener, 3-2. Trent Prokes (Modesto HS) went 2-3 and Luke Brown (Cathlamet, WA) drove in 2 runs for the Pirates. Pitchers Jason Raine (Golden Valley HS), Tyler Stout (Pitman HS) and Zach Brown (Cathlamet, WA) held the Mustangs to only 3 hits.
Tennis: MJC’s Women’s team is still undefeated, currently 7-0 overall (4-0 conference) after a big win in Fresno last Friday. They beat the Rams 6-3. Nora Ribeiro (Belgium) avenged an earlier loss (during the Modesto Tournament) at the No. 2 singles position, and also partnered with Maya Young (Turlock HS) to stay undefeated in conference at No. 1 doubles position. Jenna Carriegan (Gregori HS) secured the win for Pirates at the No. 4 singles position. The men’s team is 3-1 overall (1-0 conference) after a tight win in Fresno 5-4. It came down to the No. 6 singles spot where RJ Garcia (Orestimba HS) sealed the win for the team.
Softball: MJC is 4-7 and hosts Sacramento City in a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.
Basketball: Tommy Williams (Chavez HS) was voted to the First Team All-Big 8 Conference. after averaging 9 points per game, five assists, 4.8 rebounds, and two steals.
Freshman Annie Winton (Livingston HS) made the All-Big 8 Conference team on the women’s side after averaging 19 points per game (third in the conference).
