How Ceres alum, ex-Bee softball player of year has University of Washington in Top 10
Ceres High alum Sis Bates, who was the 2016 Bee’s All-District Softball Player of the Year, is hitting over .400 for the No. 6 ranked Washington Huskies.
Bates, a junior, leads the team in batting average (.403), runs (36), and stolen bases (nine).
In a three-game sweep over Cal this past weekend, Bates was 8 for 11 with five runs scored and one RBI.
The Huskies, who have played in the Women’s College World Series in each of the last two years, are 32-6 and 9-3 in the Pac-12 Conference.
“Our expectation is always the same – to win the last game played in Oklahoma City (at the Women’s College World Series),” Bates told Seattle Times reporter Mike Vorel before the season. “So that’s the expectation this year, and that will be our expectation the following year. We’re just excited to get going and compete together.”
Bates, who won the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year award in 2018, was named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year watch list before the season.
“Pretty special young lady,” Arizona coach Mike Candrea said in an recent interview with espnW reporter Graham Hays. “The thing I love about her is her enjoyment of playing the game. I mean, she just absolutely — it’s quite obvious she has fun. She’s very talented, but I think the big thing is she brings so much energy to that infield.”
