Cal State Stanislaus’ Randolph, Alvarado qualify for NCAA Division II track championships
Cal State Stanislaus’ Gary Randolph and Abraham Alvarado are bound for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Randolph qualified in all three throwing disciplines, while Alvarado punched his ticket in the 800-meter run.
A sophomore from Atwater, Alvarado has the second-best qualifying time in the country at 1 minute, 48.09 seconds. The California Collegiate Athletic Association champion qualified for the same event last year but finished 17th overall with a time more than 6 seconds slower.
Randolph is ranked 14th in the nation in the hammer and shot put and won both events at the CCAA Championships. Randolph qualified with a season-best 57 feet, 1/4 inch in the shot and a career-best 198-4 in the hammer. His mark of 171-2 in the discus is ranked 18th.
The Division II Championships will be held from May 21-23 in Allendale, Mich. Prelims for the 800 begin Friday, and the finals for Randolph’s program will be split over three days: hammer on Thursday, discus on Friday and shot put on Saturday.
Also qualifying for the NCAAs are Stanislaus hammer throwers Lindsay McKee and Krystal Alnas and 800 runner Kyrah Vaughn.
McKee, the CCAA champion, has tossed 184-4. Alnas, the league runner-up, enters with a 182-7. Vaughn recorded a season-best 2:10.07 during a last-chance meet at Sacramento State last weekend. She placed sixth in the CCAA meet and was a member of Stanislaus’ league-champion 4x400 relay team.
