Local digest: Gregori does it again, as Apple tosses no-hitter against Davis
For the second consecutive game, a Gregori High pitcher fired a no-hitter.
Cassie Apple fired a five-inning, mercy-rule no-hitter as the Jaguars cruised past Davis 10-0. Her no-no comes two days after Maddi Marsh did the same to Beyer.
Offensively for Gregori, Ashley McBay, Samantha Shaffer, Nikki Alexander and Mehana Johns collected two hits apiece. McBay drove in two runs, while Shaffer had two doubles.
With the win, Gregori (7-1) remains a half game behind Enochs (8-1) in the race for the Modesto Metro Conference title. In their lone meeting thus far, Gregori beat Enochs 4-3.
Sierra 1, Manteca 0 at Sierra – The Timberwolves scored the game’s lone run in the sixth inning. Sierra improves to 8-3 in the Valley Oak League, three games back of unbeaten East Union.
Turlock Christian 20, Brookside Christian 1 in Stockton – The Eagles scored 10 runs in the first inning en route to a lopsided victory. Kayleen Baskin led Turlock Christian with three hits in four trips to the plate, while Aimee Jones and Megan Jones had two hits apiece.
Baseball
Sacramento City 5, Modesto JC 4 at MJC –The Pirates (11-22-1, 5-15), in their final home game, rallied from a 4-0 deficit but fell to their fifth consecutive loss. RBI hits by Jacob Cooper and William Reeder, and a bases-loaded walk by Robert Steves closed the deficit in the sixth. Cooper’s run-scoring groundout an inning later made it 5-4.
Starter Eddie Machado (3-4) allowed four runs (two earned) in 52/3 innings. MJC finishes the season today at Sacramento City (16-19, 8-12).
Pitman 5, Buhach Colony 3 in Turlock – Donovan Bravo scored on a passed ball to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth and Anthony Encalada added an RBI single to help the Pride (8-1) gain sole possession of first place in the Central California Conference.
Atwater 8, Golden Valley 2 in Merced – Derek Molina went 3 for 3, including a home run, and Austin Conour threw a complete game for the Falcons (12-9, 4-5).
Hughson 8, Escalon 7 in Hughson – Hughson scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a come-from-behind win over the Cougars. Kyle Cockrell picked up the victory in relief, in addition to going 4 for 4 at the plate with four runs scored and an RBI. Cockrell’s RBI single in the seventh tied the score and later raced home with the winning run on an error. Escalon’s Demetrius Perez was 4 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. With a win, or a loss by Ripon, the Huskies will clinch their second consecutive Trans-Valley League title.
Tennis
Three women net victories – MJC freshman Vanessa Teves and sophomore Chiara Adamo, one day after the Pirates’ heartbreaking loss in the state team finals, opened the State Championships with singles and doubles victories. Also still alive in singles is Parker Pilati.
MJC men bow out – The Pirates’ singles contestants dropped their opening matches at Ojai. Jose Gonzalez won a second-set tie-breaker before he was beaten.
Ceres 9, Livingston 0 at Ceres – The Bulldogs wrapped up a perfect run through Western Athletic Conference action with a blanking of the Wolves. Ceres improved to 24-0 this season.
Swimming
Modesto sweeps Johansen – The Panthers defeated the Vikings 120-47 in the girls meet and 109-67 on the boys side. For the girls, Yunah Kim (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke), Kate Damrell (50 and 500 freestyles) and Xanthia Yerby (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke) were double winners. Chad Nunes (200 IM, 100 breast) won two for the boys, as did Johansen’s Kyle Christianson (50 and 100 free) and Max Sanders (200 and 500 free).
