UC San Diego blanks Stanislaus – again
The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors had won 12 of their previous 16 baseball games before they collided with UC San Diego.
The Warriors’ hot streak has ended – on a streak of zeroes.
The 27th-ranked Tritons (29-14, 24-10 California Collegiate Athletic Association) have not yielded a run against Stanislaus (18-23, 13-18) over the last three games and blanked the Warriors 10-0 and 2-0 on Saturday.
UC San Diego drew 11 walks and scored six runs in the fifth inning to seal the opener. Later, Stanislaus pitcher Tyler Murphy suffered a tough-luck loss to cap the CCAA doubleheader.
Stanislaus was shut out by San Diego for the third straight game – the first time that has happened in the Warriors’ CCAA era, which began in 1999.
Murphy allowed six hits, struck out four and walked four. The only runs, both unearned, were plated in the first inning.
Over the last three games, UC San Diego has yielded only 11 hits and held Stanislaus to a .129 average.
Marcus Mastrobuoni went 3 for 3 with a double in the first game for Stanislaus. Michael Chavarria and Patrick Mulry had the only two hits off winning pitcher Alon Leichman in the nightcap.
Nick Voumard, the starter for the Warriors in the first game, struggled with his control. He went 42/3 innings but exited during the long fifth. UC San Diego’s Tyler Howsley drove in three runs, and his two-run double in the fifth followed an error that would have ended the inning. Gradeigh Sanchez added a two-run single to extend the lead to 8-0.
Blake Wilson, a freshman, will start for Stanislaus in the final game of the series today at noon.
Softball

In the nightcap, the Otters (41-9, 25-7) scored three in the second and raced to a five-inning win. Cassidy Duke doubled and Bryanna Menor tripled for the Warriors.
Stanislaus will finish the season at home next week with four games against Sonoma State.

Jazzlyn Ayala went 6 for 6 for the host Pirates over the long day. MJC trailed 3-2 in the first game before the Mustangs pulled away with four runs in the seventh.
The Pirates will end the season Tuesday at American River.
