Pirates complete three-game sweep over Cosumnes River

The Modesto Junior College Pirates have struggled at times this season, but they no doubt have found momentum.

The Pirates (9-10-1, 3-3 Big 8 Conference), riding a 4-for-4 and three-RBI performance by right fielder William Reeder, completed a three-game sweep over Cosumnes River with a 7-2 win Saturday afternoon. It was a strong response for the Pirates, who were swept last week by Diablo Valley.

Reeder singled in runs during Modesto’s rallies in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings. Carlo Del Real’s two-run single in the eighth added to the Pirates’ cushion. Jacob Cooper and Spencer Thomas had two hits apiece, and Robert Steves drove in a run and scored twice for MJC.

Brent Montgomery (2-1) shut out Cosumnes River (12-10, 2-4) on six hits over seven strong innings. Del Real contributed two nice defensive plays at third base.

Modesto returns home Tuesday to begin a three-game series against unbeaten San Joaquin Delta (20-0, 6-0), the nation’s top-ranked community college team.

Warriors split – Cal State Stanislaus (7-18, 2-13 California Collegiate Athletic Association) snapped an eight-game losing streak by defeating Sonoma State 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader at Warrior Field. Nick Molina scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning for what turned out to be the decisive run.

Nick Voumard (3-1) struck out five in 61/3 innings for the win. Aaron Godinez pitched out of trouble in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth for the save.

Sonoma State (16-13, 10-10) rallied for 14 runs in the first five innings to take the nightcap 15-5. Erik Colombini stroked a three-run homer in the ninth, and Scott Stetson and Christian Kahler had three hits each for the Warriors.

High school swimming

Relays at Johansen – The Modesto girls and Atwater boys earned team titles at the 22nd NorCal Relays at Johansen High.

The Panther girls captured three relay races and totaled 62 points, five more than runner-up Pitman. The Atwater boys finished with 60 points, nine ahead of Pitman.

Local swimmers will return to Johansen for the Stanislaus County meet April 18.

College track and field

Stanislaus at Sac – Cal State Stanislaus junior Gary Randolph continued his good form, capping a busy day with a second-place finish in the discus (171 feet, 2 inches) at Sacramento State’s Hornet Invitational. Randolph also placed fifth in the shot put (53-9) and hammer throw (185-8). Abraham Alvarado placed second in the 800 (1:51.14), beaten by Cal’s Eugene Hamilton III.

The Stanislaus women were led by a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay.

College softball

Pirates drop pair – MJC (5-20, 0-8 Big 8) extended its losing streak to 13 by dropping its doubleheader to Santa Rosa (16-11, 3-5) 10-5 and 11-3 at the MJC West Campus field.
