Machado strikes out 10 but MJC falls

Eddie Machado’s 10-strikeout performance was for naught Tuesday afternoon, to the chagrin of the Modesto Junior College Pirates.

Machado allowed only four hits and two runs, both unearned, in 71/3 innings in MJC’s 2-1 nonleague loss to visiting American River.

Three errors figured in the loss for Modesto (5-6-1), which begins Big 8 Conference action next week. American River (7-6) made the most of single runs in the second and the sixth.

The Pirates made it interesting in the ninth, however, and pulled to within 2-1 on William Reeder’s single that scored pinch runner Michael Maddox. Robert Steves went 2 for 4 for Modesto.

MJC travels to San Joaquin Delta on Thursday and returns home Saturday against Sacramento.

Women’s tennis

Still unbeaten – The Pirates (8-0, 4-0) remained in first place in the Big 8 with a 9-0 win over Sacramento. Friday, with a chance to gain control of the league race, they will welcome defending conference champion Fresno, which Modesto defeated 6-3 on Feb. 17.

Men’s tennis

Pirates roll – Led by Jose Gonzalez at No. 1 singles, MJC didn’t drop a set in its 9-0 win at Sacramento City.
