Ex-MJC head coach Sam Young shares stage with new UC Davis coach Dan Hawkins
New UC Davis head football coach Dan Hawkins stopped his introductory press conference on Tuesday to introduce an old friend he saw in the audience.
That old friend was Sam Young, the Modesto Junior College defensive coordinator and former head coach. Young and Hawkins served on the same staff at UC Davis during the 1980s.
“Get up here right now!” Hawkins told Young, a resident of Turlock.
“If I could find the one guy in America that knew the most about football...it’s that guy,” Hawkins said in reference to Young during a funny exchange.
“My man Sam Young,” Hawkins exclaimed. “Singin’ Sammy!”
Hawkins, a former UC Davis running back, became the Aggies’ 17th head coach. He went 53-11 at Boise State (2001-’05) and was 19-39 at Colorado (2006-’10).
