Kadry on Bowling: Fall leagues just around the corner

Come by yourself, with a friend or with several friends and join a fall bowling league.

Most leagues are set to start next Tuesday but will accept bowlers anytime. There are leagues for everyone from beginner to advanced, and all age groups.

Call Theresa Medeiros or Raymond Waring at 209-571-2695 for McHenry Bowl and Wayne Garber at 209-524-9161 at Yosemite, or check out the websites at mchenrybowl.com or yosemitelanes.com.

▪ The second annual Sizzlin’ Summer Doubles No-Tap Tournament is competing this week at McHenry. The tournament has three divisions – men, women and mixed – and is open to McHenry winter and summer league bowlers. Bowlers can bowl as many times as they wish, but they may only place once with the same partner. Walk-ins are welcome. Call 209-571-2695 for squad times and information.

▪ The Pot-of-Gold Tournament is running this week at Yosemite. It’s open to teams from participating leagues at the center. To qualify, a team has to finish in the top half of their league. All qualifiers earn a free entry into the tournament. Check with your league secretary to see if your team qualified.

▪ Laurie Bodiford posted the overall high score and topped the women’s side in the Summer’s End No-Tap Tournament with her 934 set. Karen French finished second after posting an 888 score. Laverne Howe took third with an 830. Jay Faughn led the men with his 849. Jim Wirowek placed second with an 835 series. Rounding out the top three was Terry McChesney’s 831.

▪ The first Bowling for Autism Tournament is coming to Yosemite on Sept. 17. All money raised will go to Autism Speaks. The fundraising event will include bowling, lunch, raffle prizes and a silent auction. Lunch will be served at noon, and bowling starts at 1 p.m. Call Yosemite at 209-524-9161 for information.

▪ The release of the Peach Classic final prize list has been put on hold pending re-rate and prize winning reports not yet received. The United States Bowling Congress has granted the tournament a 30-day extension on the final posting of the list and release of the prize checks.

▪ Local pro shops are stocked up for the new season. If you are a beginner joining your first league without any equipment, consider buying your own bowling shoes. They are fairly inexpensive, and you can be money ahead by buying up front instead of renting shoes every week. Also, by having your own shoes, your approach and slide will have the same feel and footing each time, helping you develop a consistent shot.

▪ The Mega-Doubles Tournament runs at Yosemite through Sept. 25 when lanes are available. The handicap doubles event offers several options. Pairs can bowl anytime for $40 per team. Bowlers can also “wheel” their entry and bowl with up to four people at one time using their same scores. Yosemite league bowlers can enter during their league play and also “wheel” their entry with other league bowlers. There is also an optional scratch prize list available for an additional $10. Bowlers may only place once on the prize list with the same partner. Call Wayne Garber at 209-524-9161.
