Bases-loaded walk in 11th inning finishes Modesto Nuts against Stockton

The Modesto Nuts sought their first four-game winning streak of the season, but the Stockton Ports didn’t comply.

Nuts reliever Luis Niebla gave up a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch to John Nogowski in the bottom of the 11th inning, resulting in Modesto’s 4-3 loss Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

Two Stockton singles and an intentional pass preceded the game-ending walk, which denied Modesto a series sweep. Nuts starter Ryan Castellani went 6 2/3 innings. He allowed Melvin Mercedes’ tying, two-run triple in the seventh and was relieved after walking Richie Martin with two outs.

Collin Ferguson, who went 2 for 3, hit a tying RBI single in the fifth. Wes Rogers was 2 for 5 with a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth, and Luis Jean also singled home a run in the seventh.

Logan Cozart relieved Castellani and blanked Stockton on three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Stockton’s Carlos Nava (3-5) struck out five in two sharp innings of relief.

Modesto’s Drew Weeks, who was 19 for his last 44 (.432), was hitless in four at-bats.

The Nuts, after a day off Wednesday, open a four-game series against Bakersfield – the leader in the California League’s North Division in the second half – Thursday night at 7:05.
