Four-run first helps Modesto snap skid

Two run-producing doubles staked the Modesto Nuts to a first-inning lead as they went on to beat Lake Elsinore 6-2 Sunday night at John Thurman Field, halting a three-game losing streak.

Omar Carrizales led off with a double to left and scored when No. 2 hitter Forrest Wall doubled to right. One out later, Josh Fuentes was hit by a pitch and Collin Ferguson singled Wall home to make it 2-0.

With two outs, Drew Weeks delivered a two-run double to left that scored Fuentes and Ferguson.

The Nuts added a run in the fourth when Weeks scored on a sacrifice fly by Emerson Jimenez, and another run in the seventh when Carrizales doubled to center and came home on a single by Wes Rogers.

Rogers then stole his 32nd base of the season, the top figure in the California League.

Parker French (5-6) earned the victory, scattering seven hits over six innings while striking out four and walking none. He allowed an earned run in the fifth an unearned run in the sixth.

Tyler Matzek pitched two innings in relief, and Craig Schlitter struck out the side in the ninth.

The Nuts are off Tuesday and begin a three-game series in Bakersfield on Wednesday before returning to Northern California to start a four-game set in Stockton on Saturday.
