Kadry on Bowling: Garber finishes third in big Yosemite tournament

Bowling out of Chula Vista, Abraham Lopez took the title in the PBA Vanessa Brown Homes West Open at Yosemite Lanes last weekend. Lopez tallied 3,073 pins to take home the $2,000 purse.

Gregory Thompson Jr. finished second, five pins shy with a 3,068 total. Thompson earned $1,000.

Local Will Garber placed third for $800. Garber tallied a 2,669 pinfall. Other locals in the cash were Dylan Tillery in 12th for $600 and Freddy Irvin in 15th for $400. Myles Duty, Joe Petrovich, Robert Wrachford, Bob Burkett and Alex Bermudez also participated.

Competing concurrently in the PBA50 Vanessa Brown Homes West Open, Robert Brown of Cody, Wyo., took the title and the $1,700 purse. Brown won seven of his eight matches in the final rounds and tallied 3,883 pins. Locals bringing home cash were Petrovich in 11th with $500 and Rick Francis in 19th with $400.

▪ Five exceptional local youth bowlers have been named to the prestigious 2016 NorCal All-Star Team. Julia Serrano and Courtney Sheppard each earned a spot on the Major Girls team. Serrano, who has made the team before, averaged 190 this past season with a high game of 247 and high series of 619. A newcomer to the all-stars, Sheppard averaged 183. She rolled a high game of 246 and high series of 673.

Elijah Torres earned a spot on the Major Boys team. Torres finished the season with a 206 average. He posted a 280 high game and a 721 high series for the year.

Roman Heath, also a repeat winner, was named to the Junior Boys team. Heath averaged a 222, up from 212 last season. His high game was 290 and high series 734.

On the Junior Girls roster, Sara Nassberg, also a repeat winner, earned a spot. She also represented Pacific Avenue Bowl in Stockton. Nassberg’s local average was 186, and she posted a 245 high game and 664 high series.

The all-star team will be honored during the All-Star Weekend festivities Aug. 19-20 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.

▪ This Saturday, the Central Valley Bowling Club will run its singles tournament at Bellevue Bowl in Atwater. Start time is 1 p.m., and check-in is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tournament fees are $40 per event. Prize money is paid out the same day. Bowlers may bowl as guests for $10 or join the club for $20. Bowlers may sign up by emailing Vickie Briscoe at vickiebriscoe52@gmail.com or calling at 575-2415.

▪ On Thursday, the Mixed Kegler No-Tap Tournament will roll at 9:30 a.m. at McHenry Bowl. Check-in is at 9 a.m. Teams may be any combination of men and women.

▪ On Friday, the Doubles No-Tap Tournament will roll at 1 p.m. at McHenry Bowl. Check-in is at 12:30 p.m. with potluck at noon. Doubles teams can be any combination of men and women.

▪ Debbie Couch, Deana Swickard and Cindy James teamed up to win the Ladies Trios No-Tap at McHenry with a 2,276 score. Claudelle Bonaccinie, Laverne Howe and Betty Gerritsen earned second place with their 2,232 finish. In third at 2,227 were Dorothy Pollard, Glenda Barnhart and Laurie Bodiford.

▪ After 55 years of providing bowling fun in the San Jose area, Cambrian Bowl closed its doors for good. The center was not able to renew its lease to continue operation. This has been a common occurrence, especially in metropolitan areas where the land value has exceeded its use as a bowling center. Northern California Bowling Centers has reported 51 closures since 1998 in its association.
