Local Digest: MJC athletics ranks 13th in state

The Modesto Junior College athletic program finished 13th out of 107 California community colleges in the annual National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators Cup for overall performance.

The Pirates improved by five notches over last year’s ranking, thanks to the success of the MJC men’s and women’s golf teams, women’s soccer, wrestling, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s track teams. Modesto was seventh-best among Northern California schools.

“We had an outstanding year for MJC athletics,” athletic director Nick Stavrianoudakis said. “Student-athletes that come to MJC do and will get noticed, both academically and athletically.”

Mt. San Antonio topped the list for the fourth straight year, followed by Cerritos and Fresno.
