Kadry on Bowling: Three youth scholarships awarded

Three local youth bowlers have been awarded scholarships from the Modesto USBC.

Two earned the Memorial Hall of Fame Scholarship for graduating seniors based on academics and bowling achievements. Peter Kennedy will receive $1,500 toward his college education. Kennedy graduated from Downey High School and will attend Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. He’ll major in criminal justice. Allen Karle earned a $750 scholarship. He graduated from Waterford High School and plans to attend Modesto Junior College and major in performing arts.

Kennedy and Karle also will receive the Director’s Scholarship along with Koryn Marquez. The Director’s Scholarship awards an additional $125 and can be won multiple times from ninth to 12th grade. Marquez will begin her sophomore year at Downey in the fall. She hopes to attend the University of Oregon and major in computer science.

The three award winners will be recognized at the Modesto USBC Annual Awards & Installation Banquet on Nov. 5 at the Elks Lodge in Modesto.

▪ The Yosemite Scratch 6-Gamer rolls June 5 and has added a Win-A-Spot competition for the 11th annual PBA & PBA50 West Region Vanessa Brown Homes Open scheduled from June 9-12, also at Yosemite.

This week’s event will roll on the same oil pattern that will be used at the Vanessa Brown Open. Entry fee is $60 with added money from Freddy’s Tree Service. The Win-A-Spot is an additional $40, and one out of seven will win an entry. Check-in is at 11 a.m., and the competition starts at noon.

▪ No-Tap Pro-Am tournaments again will accompany the 11th annual PBA & PBA50 West Region Vanessa Brown Homes Open. There are two squads to choose from: Friday, June 10, at 4 p.m. and Saturday, June 11, at 7:30 p.m. The sweepers are in three divisions: adults ($40 entry fee), seniors ($25) and juniors ($20). Ball packages are also being offered for all entrants. Call Wayne Garber at 209-524-9161 for information. Entry forms are at the local bowling centers.

▪ The McHenry Senior Fun Day was just that. The field bowled an 8-pin no-tap, 9-pin no-tap and a regular game for the singles standings, then were matched in a Mystery Draw Doubles for a doubles prize list.

Topping the men’s singles was Gary Pattee with an 863 score. In second was Jim Bass scoring an 847. Gene Stamps placed third at an 827. Pattee and Bass each posted a no-tap 300 game. Kathy Wesley was high for the ladies singles, scoring an 811. Laverne Howe finished second with an 803 set, followed by Margaret Dodd with a score of 797.

The Mystery Doubles matched Stamps and Kathy Wesley, and the pair took first place with a 1,638 total. Pattee was teamed up with Harold Walker, and the pair totaled 1,628 for second. Dodd partnered with Eddie Lewis for a 1,617 total to take third place.

▪ The ladies have two events on the calendar this week. On June 3, the Yosemite Ladies Luncheon No-Tap rolls at 9:30 a.m. Check-in is at 9. On Monday, the McHenry Ladies Trio No-Tap Tournament rolls at 9:30 with check-in at 9. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided.

▪ The annual meeting for the Modesto USBC is set for July 17 at 10 a.m. at McHenry. On the agenda will be elections for one vice president, seven directors and three youth directors. Application forms for these positions are at the bowling center desks and must be returned by July 19. Nominations also will be accepted from the floor.
