Kadry on Bowling: Riggs, Erler top Bowlers to Veterans Link doubles
The unofficial results of the Bowlers to Veterans Link Friendship Doubles have been posted, but you won’t find the event’s real winner listed.
That honor goes to the BVL – nearly $1,000 was raised for the program that aids returning and hospitalized veterans with recreational programs.
Carol Riggs and Heide Erler were the top team with an 1,884 total. Riggs rolled no-tap games of 300-279-206, Erler added games of 266-225-298, and the pair earned 310 pins handicap.
Claude Ham and Marian Roberts (1,871) took second. Ham posted games of 276-286-300 and Roberts rolled 262-280-300. Juanita Hickman and Chris Johnson were third (1,855). Hickman finished with a 688 set and Johnson with a 749 total that included a no-tap 300 game. The pair earned 418 pins handicap.
High scorer for the tournament was Ron Gilbert. He rolled three no-tap 300 games for a 900 series. Official results and prize money will be available within a few weeks.
League qualifying for the 2015 California State BVL Tournament starts Monday. Bowlers pay $1 at the start of league play and use their league scores for qualifying. The tournament is five divisions for men and six for women, based on averages. Qualifying runs two weeks, and bowlers may qualify multiple times. The state finals will be held at McHenry Bowl on March 21. ...
Wayne Garber won the year’s first Yosemite Scratch 6-Gamer after leading the qualifying round at a plus-91. ... Only four bowlers eclipsed the 1,200 mark during qualifying: Joe Petrovich (plus-56), Chris Kraft (plus-50), and Rich Custer (plus-48). In the championship, Garber defeated Petrovich of Tracy 202-170, earning $236. ... This Friday, the 55-and-older No-Tap Tournament will run at Yosemite starting at 1 p.m. with check-in at 12:30 p.m. The Modesto United States Bowling Congress will hold its monthly clinic at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Yosemite. The clinic fee is $5 per person and includes bowling and instruction. It is open on a first-come, first-served basis. ...
ESPN will broadcast the conclusion of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VI on Sunday. The show will feature the World Bowling men’s and women’s finals. Tournament bowling will start at 10 a.m. An experimental best-frame scoring system called Frameplay will be used. It was developed by a World Bowling panel of experts. World Bowling is the sport’s international governing body and is working to have it added as an official Olympic Games event. ...
For local scratch bowlers, the Stockton USBC Master Tournament runs this weekend at Pacific Avenue Bowl. There is one qualifying squad Saturday at 1 p.m. Check-in begins at noon. Qualifying will be six games across 12 lanes. The top 16 return Sunday at 9:30 a.m. for the final two-game, double-elimination rounds. Dress code for all rounds will be PBA-approved attire. Nominations for the Modesto Hall of Fame and Pioneer Award are due Jan. 31. Nominees can be for either meritorious service or superior performance. Hall of Fame entry requires a 20-year history and Pioneer a 30-year involvement. Forms are available at both bowling centers.
