Kadry on Bowling: Past local stars keep rolling in military
Two past local youth bowling stars excelled in the recent Armed Forces Bowling Championships at Travis Air Force Base.
Staff Sgt. Rose Brown is serving in the Army and stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. Airman 1st Class Joshua Cramer is serving in the Air Force at Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas.
Brown won the ladies singles competition and was named grand champion. Brown placed second in women’s doubles with Sgt. 1st Class Chandres Bolden of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command.
She also took third in mixed doubles with Sgt. Brian Sargent from Fort Bliss. Her All-Army team took second place. Cramer’s men’s division team took first place. He also placed third in men’s doubles with Master Sgt.
Tyler Selden from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. He teamed with Air Force Senior Airman Tonya Criss from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to take fifth inmixed doubles. Brown will be deploying in several months, and Cramer has been accepted to Officer Training School in Alabama. Congratulations to both. ...
Freddy Irvin took the title for this month’s Scratch 6-Gamer at Yosemite Lanes after qualifying second with a 1,241 score. Myles Duty led qualifying at a 214 average and a 1,288 total. The two locals met in the final round, where Irvin won 188-169. Irvin collected $345, and Duty pocketed $250. ...
On Sunday, a drop-in Celebration of Life for longtime McHenry Bowl manager Todd Bettencourt will be held at McHenry from noon to 4 p.m. Because he loved sandwiches, it will be a “Sandwich Celebration” with a buffet full of sandwiches. Memory books will be put together for his children, Joey and Tiffany, so bring your memories to share. He will be laid to rest at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella in a private service. ...
The McHenry Monte Carlo on Saturday at 6 p.m. will be dedicated to Bettencourt, who ran the event every Saturday night for about six years. Half of the proceeds will help with burial expenses, and donations will be accepted. For those unfamiliar with Monte Carlo, bowlers roll at colored pins for money payoffs. Check-in starts at 5:30 p.m. ...
On Saturday, the Central Valley Bowling Club will hold a doubles tournament at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood at 1 p.m. Registration desks open at 11 a.m. Teams can be any combination of men and women with one prize list. Entry fee is $40 per person. You can bowl as a guest for an additional $10 or join the club for $20.
