Kadry on Bowling: Scores drift lower in Yosemite Scratch tourney

It was a tough shot at the Yosemite Scratch 6-Gamer Tournament on Sunday. Usually, it takes a 240-250 average to lead the qualifying, but this month, a 217 average was high. The shot was the notorious USBC Open Championship Team Shot. Noel Vasquez of Sacramento was high qualifier at 1,305. Local Nick Kelley was second at 1,303. Vasquez was the 2015 Scratch 6-Gamer Tournament of Champions winner, and Kelley was the monthly winner last month. The two met in the final stepladder match, and Vasquez won 224-194. Vasquez collected $365, and Kelley, who leads the Bowler of the Year stats, earned $260. ...

David Brown and Joyce and Eddie Lewis teamed to win the Mixed Kegler Trio Tournament with a 2,532 score. Brown boosted the team’s total with three no-tap 300 games for a 900 set. Janet and Loren Spooner and Lana Trantham finished second at 2,428. The Swickards – Beth, Ronald and Mike – finished third at 2,388. Mike and Ron each contributed a no-tap 300 game. ...

Vickie and Bill Briscoe topped the Any Doubles Will Do Tournament scoring with a 1,659. Vickie posted a 918 series, and Bill added a 741 set that included a no-tap 300 game. Linda Standridge and Marie Graves placed second at 1,607. Tying for third at 1,599 were the teams of Ron Quintanal and Gary Pattee, and Claude Ham and Earl Purcell. Pattee recorded two no-tap 300 games. ...

On Friday, the 50 and Older No-Tap Tournament runs at Yosemite starting at 1 p.m. The singles event has a separate prize fund for men and women. ...

In celebration of Mother’s Day, a Ladies Trio No-Tap Tournament will be held Monday at McHenry starting at 9:30 a.m. The bowl will add $100 to the prize fund. Ladies pay only $5 per person, and side pots will be included. Doughnuts and coffee will be served. Check-in will be at 9 a.m. ...

The 47th annual California State Senior Open Championships are scheduled for five weekends from Oct. 22 through Nov. 20. The November dates have added Friday squads. Teams will compete at Steve Cook’s Fireside Lanes in Citrus Heights, and doubles and singles will roll at AMF Rocklin Lanes in Rocklin. The tournament is open to bowlers 50 and older. Events include four-person teams in two divisions, plus doubles, singles and all-events in three divisions. Entries are available at the bowl desks and close Sept. 15. ...

The California State Youth Championships will be held at Forest Lanes in Lake Forest on weekends from July 9-24. Team, doubles and singles will be bowled scratch and broken into five divisions based on averages. Walk-ins and multiple entries are welcome. Four teams are left in the PBA League, and the semifinal elimination rounds at Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, will air on ESPN on Sunday at 10 a.m. The first semifinal will feature the GEICO New York City WTT KingPins against the hometown favorite Shipyard Brewing Co. Portland Lumberjacks. The second semifinal pits the Barbasol Motown Muscle against the GoBowling.com Dallas Strikers. The matches will be rolled in a Baker format. The winners will meet at Bayside in the Elias Cup finals, which ESPN will telecast May 8 at 10 a.m. The Elias Cup, named after the late PBA founder and Hall of Famer Eddie Elias, will be decided by singles, doubles and trios matches worth one point each, followed by a three-point Baker team finale.
