Kadry on Bowling: Modesto USBC Bowlers of the Year are crowned

The Modesto USBC Bowlers of the Year were decided Sunday with Nick Kelley and Joann Gonzalez taking the titles.

After the first three games at Yosemite Lanes, Raymond Coronado led the men’s field with an 815 set. Kelley was second with a 793, followed by Jim Gordin (759), Rich Custer (737), Eddie Waring (731) and Wayne Garber (729).

On the ladies’ side, Brittany Marckese led the field with a 667 series. Carol Heed followed with a 651. Bonnie Garber and Joann Gonzalez left Yosemite tied at 642.

Moving to McHenry Bowl for the second session, Kelley rolled an 804 for his winning total of 1,597. Coronado added a 709 for a 1,524 total and second place, and Waring turned in a 765 for a 1,496 total and third place.

For the ladies, Gonzalez scored a 669 to total her first-place score of 1,311. Garber finished with a 651 to take second at 1,293. Marckese finished third after shooting a 605 for a 1,272 total.

Coronado and Nick Kelley each bowled a 300 game.

The two winners will receive an entry into next year’s Modesto Masters or Queens Tournament and will be recognized at the Modesto USBC Annual Awards and Installation Dinner. ...

Joe Kusunoki, bowling out of Fresno, won the Central Valley Senior Bowling Club’s stop at West Valley Bowl in Tracy. Heidi Erler of Modesto qualified in the top spot with a 962 for four games. Kusunoki was second at 948. The two met in the stepladder finals, where Kusunoki won 262-219 for the title and $193 first prize. Erler earned $163 for second. The next club meet is set for May 21 at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood. ...

Modesto youth made a good showing in the Pepsi Youth Championships District Finals. Fifteen will advance to the State Finals at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley on May 7-8, including Haley Spani and Reanna Abreu in the girls under-12 division; Sara Nassberg and Vikki Walker in girls under 15; Borgie Bueno, Fonzy Cadiz, Joey Irvin and Carter Christensen in boys under 12; Yobie Bueno, Aidan Coleman, Roman Heath and Ashton Russell in boys under 15; and Daniel Ford, Joshua Gaddam and Derrick Munson in boys under 20. Winners from the State Finals earn a trip to the USBC Junior Gold Championships in Indianapolis. ...

The McHenry Kegler Trio No-Tap Tournament is set for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Teams can be any combination of men and women. Check-in is at 9 a.m. Come with a team or alone and form a team. ...

On April 22, the Any Doubles Will Do No-Tap Tournament runs at McHenry at 1 p.m. The tournament allows teams in any combination of men and women but with only one prize list. Potluck at noon, and check-in at 12:30. ...

The April round of the Yosemite Scratch 6-Gamer is set for April 24 at noon. Check-in at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $60, and better than one out of four will cash. Freddy’s Tree Service has added money to the prize fund and is sponsoring the 6-Gamer Bowler of the Year race. ...

The PBA League Quarterfinals will air on ESPN on Sunday at 10 a.m. The final two two-game matches from Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, will feature the L.A. X team against the Barbasol Motown Muscle in the first match and Concrete Software Brooklyn Styles against the GoBowling.com Dallas Strikers in the second match. The matches will be rolled in a Baker format. Winners of Sunday’s quarterfinals will meet in the second semifinal match that will air on ESPN on May 1.
