Kadry on Bowling: Veteran Sneed rolls first 300

Nick Kelley of Modesto finished first in Yosemite Lanes’ Scratch 6-Gamer, two spots better than where he qualified.

The qualifying round was high scoring, with Rick Francis of Linden leading the field at a 1,553, a 258 average. His series included a 300 game, an 836 three-game series and 1,125 four-game series. Freddy Irvin qualified second, averaging 257 with a 1,544 total that included a 300 game and 813 set.

Kelley, who qualified third, won his first stepladder match against fourth-place Ron Case in a high-scoring 268-257 victory. Kelley then faced Irvin and won 248-237. In the championship match against Francis, Kelley shot a 233 against Francis’ 216 to take the title, the lead in the Bowler of the Year standings and the $331 first-place purse. Francis took home $240 in second-place money. ..

The 20th annual Modesto USBC Masters Tournament is this weekend. Qualifying is from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and consists of seven games across 14 lanes. The first squad is full, but the second squad has room. The top 24 will return at 9 a.m. Sunday for the final round of double-elimination, two-game matches. First place is guaranteed $3,000. Ron Quintanal and Fran Lockwood won their divisions in the Swing into Spring Crazy Bowl Tournament at McHenry Bowl. Quintanal topped the men’s list with an 849 set. Mark Cooley placed second, scoring 807, followed by Earl Purcell in third at 803. All three included a no-tap 300 game, as did John Ellis and Gene Stamps. Lockwood won the ladies’ side with her 792 score. Linda Standridge was next with her 785 series. T.J. Jensen finished third after posting a 766 set. ...

The Ladies Trio No-Tap Tournament will roll at McHenry at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Check-in is at 9 a.m.

The 16th annual Benefit Bowl at McHenry is set to bowl May 14. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Central Valley Chapter is the recipient of this year’s fundraiser. Bowling is set for 1 p.m. for teams of four. No skills are needed for this fun event. Bowling to music, an event T-shirt, a BBQ lunch, prizes and games are included in the entry fee. The Aqua Entertainment Center in Los Banos is looking to open in May. The new center will include 10 lanes of bowling, laser tag and an arcade. The center has completed the laser tag area and will start installing the Qubica lanes and machines within the next few weeks. A snack bar will provide food and beverage and is also licensed to serve beer. Initially, the center will cater to open play and parties and will offer combination packages on bowling, laser tag and the arcade. Modesto USBC Scholarship applications are available at the bowl desks and will be accepted until April 15. Two scholarships are available again this year: The Hall of Fame Scholarship is open to graduating seniors, and the Director’s Scholarship is open to high school students.
