Local Digest: Pitman swim team takes first at 23rd annual NorCal Relays
Pitman High School’s swimming team took first place at the 23rd annual Northern California Relays on Saturday at the B. Brent Bohlender Aquatics Facility at Johansen High.
The Pride totaled 210 points, just ahead of crosstown rival Turlock (200). Modesto was third (166), followed by Buhach Colony (150) and Beyer (123).
Two meet records were broken, both by Turlock girls teams.
The Bulldogs’ 400 freestyle relay team finished in 3 minutes, 40.12 seconds, shaving more than eight seconds off the mark of 3:48.77 set by Johansen in 2007. Turlock’s 200 butterfly/freestyle relay team was clocked in 1:45.05, besting the record of 1:47.85 set by Lincoln of Stockton in 2003.
The 12th annual Stanislaus County Championships will be held April 16 at the Johansen pool.
Baseball
Stanislaus State drops series – Host Cal State San Bernardino scored 10 runs off four Stanislaus State pitchers in the first three innings Sunday and won the rubber match 13-6 in the three-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series. All told, the Warriors used eight pitchers, falling to 12-9 overall and 5-6 in conference.
On Saturday, Jordan Kron threw a two-hitter as Stanislaus State earned a doubleheader split with a 5-0 win. San Bernardino won the opener 4-0 on a one-hitter by Tyler Wells, who retired 20 consecutive hitters.
Kron retired the first 10 hitters before allowing a walk and took a no-hit bid into the seventh. He finished with 10 strikeouts.
Michael Chavarria’s fourth home run of the season, a two-run drive in the fourth inning, put the Warriors ahead 4-0. Charlie Gaff added three hits, and Patrick Mulry and Nathan Chunn had two hits apiece.
The Warriors return to action Friday against visiting Cal State San Marcos at 5 p.m.
Softball
Sacramento City 6-18, Modesto JC 0-0 in Modesto – The Pirates fell to 0-5 in Big 8 Conference action, and the Panthers improved to 5-0 with the doubleheader sweep. In the opener, SCC’s Kali Sargent threw a one-hitter, allowing only a double to Megan McCormick. MJC’s Kassey Sunde went 2 for 3 in the second game.
San Francisco State 2-2, Stanislaus State 1-3 in San Francisco – After the Gators took the first game, Amy Pedretti went 3 for 4 to help the Warriors gain a split of the CCAA doubleheader. Karina Callazo earned the victory, scattering six hits in six innings. Stanislaus State is 15-12 overall and 12-10 in conference play.
Track and field
MJC’s Roberts a triple winner in Visalia – Daniel Roberts of Modesto Junior College won all three of his throwing events at the Sequoia Relays. He threw 202 feet in the hammer, 174 feet in the discus and put the shot 51-7.
On the track, Donovan Wallace won the 200 and took the 100 with a personal-best time of 10.81 seconds. On the women’s side, Breanna Lowther was a double winner, capturing the discus (129-8) and hammer (152-7). Amber Flores took first in the pole vault with a personal best of 10-10, and Harfeen Pabla won the 800 in 2:22.08. Pabla teamed with Jocelyne Montes, Mariajose Gorrea and Cecilia Carretero for a 9:38.6 in the 4x800 relay, breaking the school record by more than nine seconds.
Stanislaus’ Wilson earns national bid in Sacramento – Channing Wilson threw the javelin 159-10 at the Sacramento State Invitational to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships in Tampa, Fla., in May. Her mark ranks No. 2 in the nation this year and was just shy of her school record (160-4) set in 2014.
