Oakdale’s Noon wrestles at NCAA Championship
Northern Colorado senior and Oakdale High School graduate Trent Noon is one of 330 wrestlers who have qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship beginning Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Noon, a former Sac-Joaquin Section Masters champion and medalist at the state meet, advanced to the NCAA after he placed fourth in the 197-pound class in the Big 12 Championship. He went 2-2 at the Big 12s.
Noon is 24-8 this season with six pins.
Baseball
Modesto JC vs. Delta – Modesto Junior College welcomes defending Big 8 Conference champion Delta to its ballpark Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in a rescheduled game after last weekend’s rainout. Brandon Scott is the scheduled starter for Modesto.
The Pirates (6-11, 0-2) opened the Big 8 season with two one-run losses to the Mustangs (16-1, 2-0), the latter a 2-1 decision Tuesday in Stockton. Delta’s Alex Dentoni struck out eight in seven innings, but Modesto struck in the eighth on Anthony Enwiya’s pinch-hit home run. The Pirates then stranded two baserunners in the ninth. MJC starter Tyler Arnsberg allowed two runs and struck out three in five innings.
“We’re competing our tails off and don’t have many wins to show for it,” MJC coach Zeb Brayton said. “I like the way we’re playing. It’s just that everyone we’ve played this season with the exception of Redwoods is very good.”
Sacramento City comes to MJC for a game Saturday at 1 p.m. Jacob Corn will start for the Pirates.
Enochs 7, Davis 1 – C.J. Hackett and Travis Graham drove in two runs apiece for the Eagles (3-1) in their win over Grace Davis (0-5-1).
Track and field
County vs. County – The best track athletes of Stanislaus and Merced counties collide in the annual County vs. County Meet on Friday at Oakdale. Action begins with field events at 4 p.m. and running events at 5:30.
Randolph honored – Cal State Stanislaus junior Gary Randolph, one of the nation’s best in the hammer throw and shot put, was selected as the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Track Athlete of the Week. Randolph, of Healdsburg, won the hammer throw (202 feet) and shot put (53-7 1/2 ) at last weekend’s UC Davis Aggie Open.
Swimming
Johansen Relays – Swimmers and divers from 11 schools will compete in the 22nd annual Johansen Relays on Saturday at the Brent Bohlender Aquatics Center. The meet begins at 9 a.m.
Golf
Stanislaus medalist – Cal State Stanislaus sophomore Jahaan Nargussi shot rounds of 71 and 72 for the medalist honor at the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational this week at Poppy Ridge in Livermore. Nargussi, the former California Collegiate Athletic Association Freshman of the Year, surpassed Kevin Vigna of Simon Fraser for his first collegiate tournament win.
Stanislaus placed eighth in the field, 21 strokes behind first-place and top-ranked Chico State.
Gregori 210, Beyer 248 – Greg Jalli shot a 2-over 38 at Dryden Park to lead Gregori to a Modesto Metro Conference win.
Downey wins – The Knights (2-0) defeated Johansen (1-2) despite a 1-under 35 by Vikings senior Daniel Pena at Creekside.
Softball
MJC vs. Diablo Valley – MJC (4-11, 0-1) meets Diablo Valley for a doubleheader Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Pirates’ West Campus diamond. The games were rained out last weekend.
The Pirates opened the Big 8 season Tuesday with an 8-0 loss at Cosumnes River (17-3, 1-0) in five innings. Haylie Prater, Megan McCormick and Makayla Martin singled for Modesto.
Sacramento City visits Modesto for a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
