Kadry on Bowling: Modesto teen sets record
Another record was broken for California and Modesto bowlers this week.
Matt Peters, 19, smashed the Modesto youth record and is high for the year among the state’s youth bowlers with his 878 series on games of 300-279-299 in the Junior Gold at McHenry Bowl. After his first 12 strikes for the 300, Peters left a 4-pin in the first frame and a 10-pin in the 11th for his 279. He strung another 11 strikes before leaving a 10-pin again on the final ball for his 299.
“I thought I might have a chance for my second 800 series after the first game,” Peters said, “but I never thought it would be this high.”
He rolled his first 800 series one year ago, an 803. Peters, a Modesto Junior College student taking computer science classes, has been bowling most of his life. His average skyrocketed from about 130 three years ago to his current 205. He credits the added competition in the San Joaquin Travel and Junior Gold leagues and his former teammate Kyle Simi’s coaching for his improvement. ...
The Modesto City Tournament kicks off Saturday, and if you haven’t preregistered, you can sign up before each squad. Saturday squads run at 11 a.m., and Sunday squads are at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for all events. The team event will be held at Yosemite Lanes, and doubles and singles will be at McHenry. Teams are made up of four persons in two divisions: men’s and mixed. Doubles teams can be men, women or mixed. Singles will have a separate prize fund for men and women. Entry fee is $25 per event. All events is optional and is $10 for the handicap list and $20 for scratch. ...
This Friday will see the first of two squads for the Modesto USBC Senior City Doubles No-tap Tournament, hosted by Yosemite. Squad time is 1 p.m. Teams can be any combination of men and women, but there is only one prize list. Entrants must be age 50 or older. Entry fee is $20 per person with an optional $3 side pot available. The final squad is set for March 11 at 1 p.m. Bowlers may compete in both squads but only place once on the prize list with the same partner. ...
Manny Simas won the men’s side of the McHenry No-Tap Tournament, scoring an 893 that included a no-tap 300 game. Gene Stamps finished second with an 856, also with a no-tap perfecto. Ron Gray took third with his 835 set. On the ladies’ side, Loretta Stigman topped the field with an 860 series. Linda Standridge placed second with an 822, and Betty Gerritsen was third with an 806. ...
This week kicks off the month-long Bowling for the Cure at McHenry. Bowlers pay $1 and use their league scores for the prize board, which has prizes of different values placed in random order. Wherever your score lands on the list, that will be your prize. The last day to enter is March 28. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. ...
The Ladies No-Tap Trio Tournament is on the calendar for Monday at McHenry. Tournament scoring starts at 9:30 a.m., with check-in at 9. ...
The next tournament for the Central Valley Bowling Club will be hosted by Yosemite on March 19 at 1 p.m. Entry and membership forms are available at local bowling centers. ...
Modesto USBC Scholarship applications are available at the bowl desks and will be accepted until April 15. Two scholarships are available again this year – the Hall of Fame Scholarship, open to graduating seniors, and the Director’s Scholarship, open to high school students.
