Chasing the Bulls: Curry’s huge 3 lifts Warriors in OT

The Bee Sports staff tracks the Warriors’ progress toward breaking the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ record 72 wins, using a measuring stick from the past to gauge the present. Here’s where the teams stood 58 games into the season:

Feb. 27, 2016: The Golden State Warriors defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 121-118 in overtime when Stephen Curry hit a 38-foot shot with .6 seconds to play. Curry finished with a game-high 46 points on 14-of-24 shooting (including 12 of 16 from beyond the arc). Klay Thompson scored 32 points and Draymond Green had 14 rebounds and 14 assists.

The win was the Warriors’ fifth in a row and finished their seven-game trip 6-1. They clinched a playoff berth when Houston lost to San Antonio.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 37 points. He had 12 rebounds. Serge Ibaka had 15 points and a game-high 20 rebounds. Russell Westbrook finished with 26 points and 13 assists.

Player of the game: Curry not only tied the single-game record for made three-point shots with 12, he set the single-season record with his 288th.

Quote: “Obviously a lot has to go our way down the stretch. Shots going in … huge stops.” – Curry said of his team’s overcoming a four-point deficit in the final 14 seconds in regulation. He is the first player in NBA history to hit 10 three-point shots in consecutive games.

Warriors’ record: 53-5

March 2, 1996: Michael Jordan, showing no effects from a hard fall the night before, scored 21 points and the Chicago Bulls used defense and Dennis Rodman's rebounding to rout the Boston Celtics 107-75 Saturday night.

The Bulls improved to 28-0 at home with the victory won their 35th consecutive regular-season game at United Center.

Player of the game: Dennis Rodman had 15 rebounds and produced the three loudest ovations of the night with an early long-range jumper, a slam on a pass from Jordan and an all-out dive on the floor for a loose ball in the third quarter.

Bulls’ record: 52-6
