Kadry on Bowling: Bowlers to Veterans Link qualifying begins Sunday at McHenry, Yosemite

The Modesto USBC will start its Bowlers to Veterans Link league qualifying rounds Feb. 7 at McHenry Bowl and Yosemite Lanes. Bowlers pay $1 at the start of league play and use their scores to qualify for a spot to represent Modesto at the BVL State Finals. The tournament has five divisions for men and six for women, all based on average. Qualifying runs for two weeks, and bowlers may try to qualify multiple times. The state finals will be held May 14-15 at Keystone Lanes in Norwalk. The BVL is a national nonprofit charitable organization that raises about $1 million annually to fund recreational equipment and therapeutic supplies for United States veterans. ...

Longtime bowler Frank Alcaraz died last week, and his services are scheduled for Wednesday at Eaton Family Funeral at 513 12th Street in Modesto. A viewing is scheduled from 5-6:30 p.m., and services begin at 6:30. Burial will be at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. ...

If you know of a high school senior who could use financial help to attend college, scholarship money is available through the Modesto USBC. Applications are at the bowling centers and are easy to complete. The deadline for submission is April 15. Two award types are available again this year and can be given to multiple recipients. The Hall of Fame Scholarship is awarded to youth bowlers who are graduating seniors this year. The award is based on bowling record, scholastic aptitude and school involvement. The second award is the Director’s Scholarship, which can be won multiple times from ninth through 12th grade. It’s open to children or grandchildren of current league bowlers. ...

Myles Duty earned the January title in the Yosemite Scratch 6-Gamer last weekend after finishing second in the qualifying round. Kevin Harlin of Milpitas was the top qualifier with a 1,411 total. Duty’s qualifying score was 1,361, and he advanced in the stepladder to meet Harlin in the final. Both were lined up and posting strikes until Harlin’s ninth frame. He left a 6-7-10 split to open the door for Duty’s 256-243 win. Duty won $390 and secured a spot in the year-end Tournament of Champions. Harlin earned $260. ...

Vickie Briscoe won the ladies’ side of the Friday No-Tap at McHenry with an 856 score. Betty Gerritsen was second with an 845. Taking third was Inez Simas with an 830. Ron Quintanal headed the men’s side, scoring an 866 set. Charles Nishiguchi finished second at 853, followed by Gene Stamps with an 844. Nishiguchi and Stamps posted no-tap 300 games. ...

For men age 55 and older and women 50 and older who would like a little friendly competition, the Central Valley Senior Bowling Club is kicking off with an inaugural tournament Feb. 20 at McHenry at 1 p.m. Cost is $20 per year for membership. Tournament fees are $40 per event. Guests may bowl with an additional $10 fee but must join if they cash in the event. The format for each event starts with four games of qualifying. The top scorers will participate in a stepladder final round immediately after qualifying. Membership applications and tournament entry forms are available at both centers.
