Modesto senior Orlando Cardenas outkicked Downey junior Inteus Schiavo to the finish line and led the Panthers to a Modesto Metro Conference boys cross country victory Wednesday at Legion Park.

Gregori’s strong finish was keyed by top-10 finishes from freshman Santiago Ruiz (third, 16:55.8), sophomore Roman Franzia (ninth, 17:34.94) and junior Jeremy Hart (10th, 17:43.71). Freshman Mason Reeves finished 11th in 17:44.50.
Also finishing in the top 15 were Downey sophomore Moises Benavides (fifth, 17:15.03), Beyer sophomore Andrew Anderson (12th, 17:50.63) and Downey senior Matthew Krieger (14th, 17:53).
In the girls race, Downey senior Arielle Names won in 19:48.28, just ahead of Modesto runners Savannah Mendoza (19:53.85) and Hilda Perez (19:57.24).
Perez and Mendoza, who were joined in the top 10 by teammates Aryana Perillo (seventh, 20:43.08), Sonia Perez (eighth, 20:45.63) and Kerry Young (ninth, 20:57.94), helped Modesto to a slim 29-32 win over Downey, which saw Esmerelda Aguayo (fourth, 20:10.86), Haylee Osgood (sixth, 20:35.61) and Erika Martinez (10th, 21:11.03) also finish among the top 10.
Enochs (83) was third, followed by Gregori (92) and Beyer (147). Davis and Johansen did not post scores.
The Eagles’ Clarissa Morales was fifth (20:14.63), officially the only runner not from Downey or Modesto in the top 10. Johansen’s Izabel Lopez-Mendoza (20:33.87) delivered the sixth-fastest time, but because her team did not have enough runners for a full squad, her score was not counted.
