Prep Rewind: Gregori volleyball team defeats Central Catholic
From close range or distance, Gregori junior Jenna Tobin was tough to contain.
The outside hitter had a match-high 11 kills and nine aces as the Jaguars spoiled Central Catholic’s season debut on Thursday evening.
Alyssa Bartlett finished with 16 assists – many to Tobin, a second-team all-Modesto Metro Conference selection last fall – as Gregori won in three games and improved to 2-0.
Jacqueline Yost had five kills, Melissa Zanotto six assists and one ace, and Alyssa Matberry seven digs for the Raiders, who stumbled in their season opener.
Turlock 3, West 0: Julia Handy had 34 assists and eight aces for the Bulldogs in a 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 victory. Jadyn Tubbs had 13 kills, while Emily Romo tallied 11.
Pitman 3, Enochs 0 – Kiyanna Torres dished out 24 assists and Whitney Barnes had 11 kills as the host Pride swept the Eagles 25-11, 25-18, 25-23. Enochs got 11 assists and two aces from Ashley Maki, while Raegan Seifert and Alexis Guerra had nine digs apiece.
Atwater 3, Beyer 0 – Cathryn Starck had 12 kills and Aliyah Smith finished with 20 assists for the Patriots, who proved more competitive in the final two games of their loss to the visiting Falcons. Sara Gonzalez chipped in with six kills in a 25-16, 25-19, 25-20 loss.
Central Valley 3, Modesto 0 – Alyssa Cover had 36 assists and four aces, but the Panthers (1-1) dropped a hotly contested match, 26-24, 25-23, 25-21.
Golden Valley 3, Madera 2 – Abbee Croninger had a career-high 21 kills as the Cougars won a marathon match with Madera, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 15-11.
Soccer
Sierra 3, Sonora 1 – Three different players scored for the visiting Timberwolves, whose starters played their best soccer of the young season, according to assistant coach Ronnie Green. David Lopez had a goal and two assists, while Pedro Maciel and Eddie Aguilar also scored.
Modesto 2, Central Valley 1 – Osvaldo Yepez tallied a goal and Cristian Gonzales had seven saves, but the Hawks fell to 1-3-2. Central Valley had only two losses in each of the last two seasons.
Golden Valley 6, Riverbank 2 – Cruz Melgarejo had a hat trick and two assists for the Cougars (5-0-1). Sergio Valencia, Erick Gomez and Anibal Ayala also scored for Golden Valley, which led 4-1 at the half.
Tennis
Central Catholic 9, Lathrop 0 – The Raiders won all nine matches in straight sets to make quick work of the Spartans. How dominant were the Raiders? Central Catholic surrendered only four games in six singles matches. Anna Ballatore, Faith Masellis, Marissa Lopes and Alyssa McPhee posted 6-0, 6-0 victories for the defending Valley Oak League champions.
Los Banos 7, Atwater 2 – The Tigers swept singles play to keep their perfect record intact. Shirley Liu, Melanie Silva, Taylor Torongo, Audrey Moreno, Kylee Cardoza and Kiara Azevedo all collected singles victories for Los Banos.
Golf
Enochs 219, Beyer 314 – Mbeneka Maithya shot a 3-over-par 39 at Creekside Golf Course to lead a balanced lineup for the Eagles, 2-0 in MMC play. Brittneigh Redfern (41), Angela Pierce (44), CC Cytanovich (46) and Ana Casillas (49) carded sub-50 rounds.
Gregori 246, Davis 341 – The Jaguars ran away with the MMC victory over the Spartans and watched three of their own play tug-o-war with the medalist honor. Lindsey Martin emerged with a 42, but she was pushed by teammates Karina Hart (46) and Lauren Arakelian (47).
El Capitan 218, Patterson 246 – Tatianna Tafoya of the Tigers earned medalist honors with the 46, but the Gauchos’ balance clinched the Western Athletic Conference victory. El Capitan was led by Salina Carbaugh’s 48.
Hughson 243, Mountain House 329: Abigail Pohl medaled with a 58 at Turlock Golf and Country Club as the Huskies picked up their first win.
Ceres 162, Los Banos 185: The Bulldogs’ victory was buoyed by Abigail Nou’s 35 and Monika Ramirez’s 39. Morgan Pimentel led Los Banos with a 37.
