Kadry on Bowling: Trio awarded WISE scholarships

McHenry Bowl proprietor Garrad Marsh has announced this year’s WISE (We Invest in Student Education) scholarship winners: Julie Serrano, Amber Bland and Max Smith.

Serrano was awarded $750 toward her education at Cal State Stanislaus, where she’ll major in communication skills. She graduated from Gregori High School. Serrano has been an avid bowler for 10 years. She also has been active in Girl Scouts and does volunteer work in the community.

Bland was awarded $500 toward her studies at Modesto Junior College. Bland graduated from Gregori and is majoring in child development.

Smith graduated from Beyer High School and was awarded a $500 scholarship. Smith will be in MJC’s Transition Program. ...

The McHenry Monte Carlo will roll this Saturday at 6 p.m. in a tribute to Charlie Robertson, a longtime bowler in the Modesto area who died Aug. 10. He was an original two-handed bowler before it was popular and always carried a strong 200-plus average. He loved to bowl Monte Carlo, and his ready laugh will be missed by all. ...

Summer bowling is winding down, and the local centers are gearing up for the fall season. Starting traditionally the Tuesday after Labor Day, the bulk of the fall leagues kick off Sept. 8. Area bowls report there are still openings for teams, couples and individuals on a variety of days, times and formats. Summer league tournaments are on tap for next week with the Sizzlin’ Summer Doubles Tournament at McHenry and the Pot-of-Gold Tournament at Yosemite. The Pot of Gold is open to teams from participating leagues. To qualify, a team must finish in the top half of its league. All qualifiers earn free entry into the tournament.

McHenry summer league bowlers are eligible to compete in the Sizzlin’ Summer No-Tap Doubles Tournament running this week. There are squads at 1 and 6:30 p.m. on most days. Bowlers can compete multiple times in three divisions – men, women and mixed – but they can only place once on the prize list with the same partner. Walk-ins are welcome. ...

Dave Moren, Thomas Teague and Jesse Parks teamed up to win the Mixed Keglers Trio Tournament with a 2,525 total. Brittany Marckese, Don Fowzer and Bud Thompson finished second with their 2,452. Marckese and Thompson each rolled a no-tap 300 game. Kyle Courtroul joined Eddie and Joyce Lewis to take third with a 2,377. ...

Jan Rupp Vigneau topped the ladies’ list by a mile in the Yosemite Senior No-Tap with a 969 set. Runner-up Betty Gerritsen posted an 869 series. Taking third was Ann Zuidema with her 886 set. On the men’s side, Bob Abujen finished at the top with a 947. Keith Hunter was second at 911, followed by Bobby Vigneau with a 904. ...

If you are a beginner and joining your first league without any personal equipment, consider buying a pair of bowling shoes. You can be money ahead by buying instead of renting shoes every week. Also, by having your own shoes, your approach and slide will have the same feel and footing each time, helping you develop a consistent shot.

Yosemite Pro Shop is offering a choice of basic shoes for $37.95, and specials on bags. Bowling Outfitters at McHenry is offering free drilling and inserts on certain high-end balls.
