Dallas Kadry on bowling: State senior tournament coming to Modesto

The California State Senior Bowling Championships are coming to town this weekend.

The team event will be held at Yosemite, and the doubles and singles will roll at McHenry.

Squads bowl during the daytime Saturday and Sunday at both houses. The tournament runs for the next five weekends and brings more than 2,500 seniors to the city. There will be a shortage of open lanes for public bowling during the daytime, but lanes will be open during the evenings. The team of Betty Gerritsen, Ray Vegas and Dave Castro won the McHenry Kegler Tournament with a 2,535 team score. Castro rolled an 809, Vegas posted a 782, and Gerritsen added a 695. The team earned 249 pins handicap. Lana Trantham and Janet and Loren Spooner (2,468) were second, followed by Kelly Napuunoa, Larry Barker and Jesse Corralez (2,444). ...

Next week is Halloween, and to celebrate, the week kicks off with the McHenry Pumpkin Shoot on Monday at 4 p.m. For only $8, bowlers will get two hours of bowling in the dark with spooky music, shoe rental, a pumpkin, a hot dog and a Halloween treat. There will also be prize drawings and a costume contest. Call June to sign-up at 571-2695. ... McHenry’s Masquerade Mondays are winding down with special prizes for participants during Afterschool Jam from 4-6 p.m. On Friday night, the Teen Extreme Halloween Bowl will run at Yosemite from 10 p.m.-1 a.m. The event will include unlimited bowling with “extreme” lighting. Coming this Friday, the Community Housing and Shelter Services (CHSS) is holding its second annual Bowlathon at McHenry. The event starts at 6 p.m. Teams of up to five members can consist of any combination of adults and youth bowlers. No bowling skills are required. Entry fee is $35 per person and includes all bowling, shoe rental, pizza and prizes. Call CHSS at 527-0444 or pick up an entry form at McHenry.

This Friday, the Halloween Senior No-tap runs at 1 p.m. at McHenry. Wear a costume and have a chance to win a prize. Halloween treats and tricks will be on hand. Check-in is at 12:30 and potluck at noon.

It’s the time of the year for the Strike-Out-Hunger program at McHenry. For every five cans of food you bring to McHenry, you can bowl one free game, including shoe rental. Those who donate can bowl then or take a coupon good for a later trip. The special runs through the middle of December and is good anytime during the day or evening. All food collected will be donated to the Interfaith Ministries food programs. ...

Tickets are available for the Modesto USBC Awards & Installation Dinner on Saturday, Nov. 15. The event is at the Elks Club on Charity Way at 5:30 p.m. Call Association Secretary Pam Marksman at 571-2695 to purchase a ticket or for more information. ... Entries are available for the Manteca Doubles Tournament scheduled for Nov. 22. Doubles teams can be all men, all women or mixed. There will be only one prize list based on the team handicap of 80 percent of 440. Entry fee is $35 per person prepaid or $40 on site. Call Manteca Bowl at 824-2889 for more information.
