Carlos Beltrán, Alex Cora Named as Potential Mets Candidates After Carlos Mendoza Firing

The New York Mets decided to fire manager Carlos Mendoza right before July.

Despite the Mets' early struggles, all signs pointed to Mendoza sticking around through the end of 2026. However, things changed, and now it will be interesting to see if the midseason firing pays off in Queens or not.

History shows that it won't turn things around right now for the Mets.

With Mendoza gone, Andy Green, the one-time San Diego Padres manager, is the interim manager in charge.

As far as potential candidates go, Green could impress and be in the running for the full-time job, but Jorge Castillo of ESPN named some others, including Mets legend Carlos Beltran.

"Perhaps Green will leave an impression and keep the job after his interim stint. It's interesting that the Mets didn't promote bench coach Kai Correa to manager. Correa is considered around the industry as a possible future manager. Another possibility within the Mets' organization is Carlos Beltrán," Castillo wrote.

Beltran, who is set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, was involved with the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal.

Before that came to light, the Mets had hired Beltran to be the manager, but things changed with the scandal.

Beltran would certainly bring some excitement to the fanbase, and the longtime outfielder returned to the franchise in a special assistant role in 2023, so he has been in Queens quite a bit.

Which Other Candidates Have Been Named?

There are some other names that make sense, and every MLB managerial job should include former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora.

The Mets should also think about Cora, and Castillo named the recently-fired manager on the list.

"Other names to keep in mind include Ross, recently fired Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora, former Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard and future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols," Castillo wrote.

David Ross is also on there, and the Mets might be wise to hire somebody with experience, especially given how much money the ownership is paying to the current roster.

What the Mets do is a big question mark, but David Stearns and company have a very important decision to make, and it could take time to materialize.
