Red Sox SS Trevor Story Delivers Promising Injury Update

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story is ahead of schedule in his recovery from sports hernia surgery. The 33-year-old now expects his return to fall closer to eight weeks rather than the original 12-week timeline, a significant development for a Red Sox team hoping to get one of their key infielders back before the summer is over.

Story underwent surgery May 22 after dealing with abdominal discomfort that dated back to spring training. The Red Sox initially classified the issue as a groin injury before further evaluation revealed a sports hernia that required surgical intervention.

The procedure placed him on the 60-day injured list and ended his first two months of the 2026 season after he appeared in 41 games for Boston.

Rob Bradford of WEEI reported Thursday that Story has resumed hitting as part of his rehabilitation process, marking a significant step forward in his recovery. He has also begun light baseball activities including jogging and tee work, though he has not yet advanced to full fielding or game-speed running.

Before the injury, Story batted .206 with three home runs, 19 RBIs and a .547 OPS. While the production fell below expectations, he remained a regular part of the lineup until surgery became necessary.

Story joined the Red Sox before the 2022 season on a six-year, $140 million contract after six seasons with the Colorado Rockies. His tenure in Boston has been defined more by injuries than production.

He underwent UCL surgery on his right elbow in 2023, then missed significant time in 2024 after shoulder surgery. Now a sports hernia has cost him the first half of 2026.

When healthy though, Story has shown he can still contribute. His combination of power, speed and defense made him one of the better middle infielders of his generation, earning All-Star selections in 2018 and 2019 along with Silver Slugger awards in both seasons. He has not been healthy enough with the Red Sox to replicate the same success he experienced with the Colorado Rockies.

If he continues progressing at this rate, Story could return to the Red Sox lineup sometime in late July or early August, giving Boston a meaningful addition heading into the stretch run. For a team trying to stay relevant in the American League, getting a healthy Story back in the infield could not come at a better time.
