What happens if Christian Gonzalez 'holds in' at Patriots training camp?
The days keep ticking off the calendar, and no news of a Christian Gonzalez contract extension is in sight. The possibility exists that the New England Patriots star cornerback could "hold in" at training camp in late July if a deal is not done. It's a distinct possibility.
How might the Patriots and Mike Vrabel turn that into a positive?
In a word – opportunity.
The New England defensive staff must find a way to build depth into the cornerback spot. Training camp, with Gonzalez not partaking, would yield ample chances to do just that.
Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones rock-solid and ready for Patriots
The other two rungs of New England's top-corner trio are happy and intact.
Outside veteran Carlton Davis and prolific slot man Marcus Jones have been locked down contract-wise and locked in on the field while leading the No. 1 unit.
"As a defense, we laid a foundation of just being showstoppers (last year)," said Davis at the team's recent minicamp. "I don't think anyone is coming here, expecting success without putting in the work. That's just not how this team is built – from the top down."
His attitude is contagious, for sure. And Jones, in an NFL intent on playing "big nickel" as a base defense, is breaking the mold with his athleticism, allowing the Patriots to excel with a traditional slot corner as the fifth DB, not some 225-pound hybrid safety.
But who might get the chance to shine at corner?
Here's a look at the candidates to round out the group.
Who's ready to step up?
Charles Woods – Played 14 regular-season games and three playoff games last year, mainly as a special-teamer after signing in New England as a free-agent.
Kindle Vildor – Journeyman special teams type with six years of experience and 27 career NFL starts, playing on four different teams.
Kobee Minor – Seventh-round choice in 2025, who started the year on the practice squad and worked his way into four games.
Marcellas Dial – Sixth-round pick in 2024, played in all 17 games as a rookie for Jerod Mayo, starting one. Missed all of 2025 with injury in August.
Karon Prunty – Fifth-round rookie out of Wake Forest opened some eyes in spring with his ball skills.
Channing Canada – Undrafted rookie out of TCU is 5-foot-11, 190 pounds and has to be considered a speed corner type.
Brandon Crossley – Part-time practice squad guy a year ago out of SMU at age 25.
Kenneth Harris – Undrafted rookie out of Oklahoma State has good size but an uphill climb ahead.
