Report: A’s lock up another rising star to long-term contract extension

The Athletics secured another one of their promising young players to a long-term contract.

Outfielder Tyler Soderstrom celebrated Christmas this week while agreeing to a seven-year, $86 million extension that would be the largest contract guarantee in franchise history. It includes a team option for an eighth season and a maximum value of $131 million, according to a report from ESPN, which was first to break the news on Thursday.

The deal all but ensures Soderstrom, a native of Turlock, will remain with the A’s throughout their stay in West Sacramento ahead of their planned move to a new ballpark in Las Vegas in 2028. The 24-year-old completed his first full Major League season in 2025, hitting 25 home runs with 93 RBI, slashing .276/.346/.474 and playing strong defense in left field after transitioning there permanently from first base.

Soderstrom joins All-Star slugger Brent Rooker and fellow outfielder Lawrence Butler as core players signed to long-term deals. Rooker signed last offseason through 2030. Butler signed in March through 2031 with a team option for 2032. Soderstrom’s deal runs through 2032 and will pay him nearly $12.3 million per season.

The A’s, notorious for not spending on young players, are working to build to a competitive roster in time for their relocation to Las Vegas after two more seasons at Sutter Health Park, the minor league stadium in West Sacramento. With Soderstrom, reigning Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz, All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson, Butler, Rooker and slugging catcher Shea Langeliers, the A’s project to be a playoff contender in 2026—if they can shore up their pitching.

They finished 76-86 last season which included a stretch of losing 20 of 21 from May 14 to June 4. They were 75-66 in all other games. They finished third in the American League with a .749 team OPS but had the fourth-worst ERA in baseball at 4.70.

The A’s drafted Soderstrom in the first round, 26th overall, in 2020. The franchise’s previous largest deal went to starting pitcher Luis Severino, who signed last December for $67 million over three seasons as a free agent. Before that, the club record was third baseman Eric Chavez’s six-year, $66 million contract signed in 2004.
