Local residents have a new place to enjoy a variety of recreational sports indoors. Two turf soccer fields already are in use and they’re just the start of what’s coming to the Modesto Sports Center complex. The south Modesto venue will celebrate its grand opening in July, with the date to be determined.

In the works is multipurpose flooring that will be used for two futsal courts, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts and a roller-skating rink. The flooring will be in about one-third of the over 30,000-square-foot complex.

The Sports Center, at 240 Bunker Ave. near a Pepsi Bottling Group facility and south of the Tuolumne River, also will have a batting cage and pitching area, owners say. The complex will hold a roller-skating event once or twice a month; skates can be rented, but participants may bring their own.

Brothers Baltej Dosanjh and Gurtej Dosanjh and their cousin Ginn Sanghera are the sports center’s co-owners. Sparked by their involvement in sports growing up, the Stanislaus County residents wanted to provide a space that offers the community a variety of sports opportunities.

“We all grew up playing sports — football, baseball, soccer, basketball — so we’ve always had an interest in playing sports, [even] volleyball, ” Baltej Dosanjh said. “But [for] volleyball, you don’t really have any facilities that you can just be like, ‘OK, let me rent it.’”

The trio first considered the idea last year, but pursued it in April by purchasing the facility, which was previously a warehouse.

“We got straight to work. I mean, in two months, we’ve got a lot of work done,” Sanghera said.

Across Stanislaus County, there are spaces available to the public. In Modesto, Mary E. Grogan Community Park has a seven-field soccer complex and All Sports Training Center offers little league and co-ed sports training and indoor soccer at 617 Winmoore Way. In Turlock, there’s an indoor soccer complex at 500 S. Center St. But nothing that offers the variety of the Modesto Sports Center.

Sanghera said the facility has garnered attention from teams locally and within the state. Ajax United, a Modesto Youth Soccer Association program, reserved the turf soccer fields for five or six weeks, he said. And someone from Davis plans to hold a clinic for a volleyball program at the facility in July.

Sanghera said there will probably be around 40 parking spaces available for attendees. He anticipates parking spots to be filled up during the weekends.

For the two turf soccer fields, one is 80 by 55 yards while the other is significantly larger at 120 by 50 yards. It will cost $80 per hour to rent the smaller field and $120 an hour for the large.

The facility will have a membership and “a pay to get in” system. Nonmembers will pay a $10 daily fee to get in, while a membership will cost $25 per month. Members will receive amenities such as discounts and access to a lounge area.

A member who wants to rent the large turf soccer field will pay $100 instead of $120. The lounge area will include seating and air conditioning.

The complex will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

To book a session, individuals must first make a login account through the complex’s website. After that, they select the “book rentals” section where they can decide on which type of field they want to reserve. Upon selecting the time length for the field, users then can select available dates and times to reserve a field. After, an invite is sent to their email where they can pay for the rental.

“We’re excited for what we’re bringing to the community, and they want to come see it,” Gurtej Dosanjh said.
