Kadry on Bowling: Area youth All-Stars head to Reno for Bowlapalooza
All-Star Weekend and the Bowlapalooza are set for Friday through Sunday at the Silver Legacy Hotel and National Bowling Stadium in Reno.
Nine local youths have made this year’s Youth Bowling Association of NorCal All-Star team and will participate. Major team members are Matt Peters and Brittany and Brianna Scheaffer. Vivian Serrano and Roman Heath are on the Junior team. For the Prep team, Ashton Russell and Sara Nassberg are members. On the Bantam team, Joseph Irvin and Nickolas Serrano made the list.
Bowlapalooza is an adult/junior tournament open to anyone. Squads are Friday and Saturday evenings. The awards banquet will be held Saturday evening for the All-Stars with the tournament Sunday. ...
It was appropriate Wayne Garber took the title in the 10th annual Willie Taylor Memorial 6-Gamer at Yosemite last weekend. Garber and Taylor were good friends and bowling buddies for many years until Taylor’s untimely death 10 years ago. Garber started the qualifying round with a 300 game and kept the momentum rolling. He finished first in qualifying with a 1,556 set, a 259 average. Mike Keough of Manteca was the second qualifier with a 1,490 total and 248 average. They met in the final, which Garber dominated 279-182. Garber earned his second win this year and $500. Keough earned $375. As a tribute to Taylor, Rick Francis threw out the first ball of the event. Francis, a top bowler in the area, shattered his leg last December and is still recovering. Freddy Irvin of Freddy’s Tree Service and Jim Gordin of Yosemite Lanes combined to add $750 to the prize fund. ...
The 66th annual Peach Classic at McHenry is over, and the verification process has started. The total prize fund of $32,925 will be paid after averages are verified. First place on the main prize list is guaranteed at $2,500, and there are six additional prize lists, including high game each for men and women, scratch series for men and women, bonus days and 10-game series. Payoff is expected the first week in September. ...
Two local no-tap tournaments are on the calendar Friday. At Yosemite, the Ladies Luncheon Tournament rolls at 9:30 a.m. The three-player teams bowl three games of no-tap scoring. Starting at 1 p.m., the McHenry Senior No-Tap Tournament competes with a separate division for men and women. Potluck is at noon, check-in at 12:30 p.m. ...
On Aug. 22, Yosemite Lanes is hosting the San Joaquin Bowling Club’s Singles Tournament. Check-in is at 10 a.m., and tournament scoring starts at 11. Cost is $60. Annual membership in the SJBC is $20, but bowlers may bowl as a guest for $10. Participants will bowl five games of qualifying with stepladder finals immediately following. One in four will cash. The Anytime Handicap Doubles with a Twist Tournament is running at Yosemite whenever lanes are available or during league play. The event has four handicap divisions: mixed, men, women and century (combined 100 years of age or older). Bowlers can wheel their entry and use their same score with up to four people. Instructor to the Pros Mark Baker will be at Yosemite the weekend of Sept. 12-13 to give one-hour private lessons. The fee is $100 for one hour of one-on-one instruction on the lanes. Bowling techniques, lane analysis and equipment will be included. The lessons are limited and filling up fast, so call Jim or Wayne at 209-524-9161 if you’re interested.
