Kadry on Bowling: Serrano, Wix head USBC scholarship winners

Six Modesto USBC scholarship winners were announced at the annual association meeting this past week. Winning the Modesto Bowling Hall of Fame Scholarship were Julia Serrano and Kevin Wix Jr. Each was awarded $1,500 to help fund their studies.

Serrano graduated from Gregori High School and has been accepted to Cal State Stanislaus, where she will major in communication skills. She has been an avid bowler for 10 years, competing in leagues and tournaments. She also was a member of the San Joaquin Travel League. Serrano averages 175 and holds a high game of 267 and series of 634. Serrano has been active in Girl Scouts and volunteers in the community.

Wix graduated from Hughson High School and also will attend Cal State Stanislaus with a major in physics in hopes of becoming an aeronautical engineer. He graduated with honors in Advanced Placement classes and became a member of the California Scholarship Federation.

In high school, Wix was involved in the Key Club, tennis team, band as a saxophone player and Future Farmers of America. He found time to volunteer for Relay for Life and organize and participate in blood drives. In bowling, Wix carries a 205 average and recorded a high game of 288 and series of 761.

Four students were awarded the Director’s Scholarship and will receive $125 each. The scholarship can be won multiple times while a student is in high school. They do not need to be bowlers but could be a child or grandchild of a bowler. Winners are Reagan Swartz, Vivian Serrano and Christian and Allen Karle. Swartz graduated from Big Valley Christian High School and will attend California Baptist University with a major in communications and public relations. Serrano is a junior at Gregori High and is leaning toward a major in sports medicine at Fresno State. Christian Karle is a sophomore at Enochs High and is considering a career as a firefighter. Allen Karle will be a senior at Waterford High and wants to attend California Baptist with a major in theater arts. ...

The 10th annual Willie Taylor Memorial Scratch 6-Gamer at Yosemite has been moved to this Sunday at noon. Taylor, a Modesto Hall of Fame member and top bowler in the area, died unexpectedly in 2006. A minimum of $500 has been added to the prize fund. Entry fee is $70 and includes a $10 donation to the Willie Taylor Memorial Scholarship fund. Optional brackets, side pots, last-game pot and senior (50 and older) insurance will be available. The tournament will be rolled on the Yosemite house shot. Chris Johnson won the ladies’ side of the Senior Fun Day Tournament at McHenry with a 932 score. Bernice Smith took the second spot, scoring an 877. Tallying an 840, Claudelle Bonaccinie finished third. On the men’s list, Keith Black was the victor with an 870 total. Manny Simas was second at 868, followed by Larry Bolles with 815. ...

The team of Carol Hancock, Kelly Napunnoa and Rose Baker won the Ladies Trios Tournament with a 2,528 score. Napunnoa boosted the team’s total with her no-tap 300 game. Joyce Lewis, Olivia Clinton and Kathy Wesley teamed up to roll a 2,371 to take second place. Rounding out the top three was the team of Pam Holly, Beverlye Llopis and Charlotte Scott. They posted a 2,300. ...
