Modesto Nuts beat rehabbing Crisp, Stockton
Coco Crisp, on a rehabilitation assignment with the Oakland A’s Advanced-A affiliate in Stockton, made an immediate impact for the Ports in Monday night’s California League series opener against the Modesto Nuts.
The only impact felt after that was by the Nuts, who rode four RBIs by Ashley Graeter and solid pitching by Konner Wade and Troy Neiman to a 5-2 victory, their sixth win in a row.
Graeter hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead, and he belted a two-run single in the eighth.
Dillon Thomas went 3 for 4 with two doubles and scored two runs. He doubled with one out in the fourth and scored Modesto’s first run on Ryan McMahon’s single. Thomas followed Michael Benjamin across the plate on Graeter’s single in the eighth. Correlle Prime also had two hits for the Nuts.
Crisp, who has played in just 13 games with the A’s this season because of elbow and neck injuries, started in left field for the Ports and played seven innings. He drew a leadoff walk in the first, moved station to station on two singles and scored Stockton’s first run on a sacrifice fly. The Ports also scored on a passed ball in the first.
Wade (6-6) and Neiman slammed the door after that. Wade retired eight hitters in a row, including Crisp on a popup to third, before allowing a two-out single in the third inning. Wade then retired 13 in a row, including Crisp again on a comebacker. Neiman pitched 11/3 hitless innings for his third save.
Wade allowed five hits and struck out two in 72/3 innings. He walked only Crisp.
The series resumes Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Banner Island Ballpark, and the final game is Wednesday at 7:05.
