Modesto Nuts complete sweep at Visalia; win streak at 5
Now that’s rubbing salt in the wound.
The Modesto Nuts completed a four-game sweep at Visalia on Sunday night with a 7-5 victory in 11 innings that couldn’t have gone over well with the Rawhide.
First, the Nuts forced extra innings by scoring a run in the top of the ninth inning in front of an announced crowd of 1,301 at Recreation Park.
In the 11th, Modesto scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by catcher Stryker Trahan following what would have been the final out of the inning, Wilson Soriano’s strikeout. Troy Stein, who drew a two-out walk and went to second on a wild pitch, scored on the error, and Soriano ended up at third. Soriano then scored on Cesar Galvez’s soft fly-ball single to left. Both runs were unearned.
Nuts closer Matt Carasiti recorded a 1-2-3 11th for his 12th save, and Modesto hopped on the bus with a five-game winning streak. The Nuts open a three-game series at Stockton on Monday at 7:10 p.m.
Ryan McMahon keyed a three-run third with a two-run homer, his 13th of the season, but the Rawhide scored a run in five consecutive innings to lead 5-3 after six.
Galvez went 3 for 5 to lead Modesto’s 12-hit attack, and McMahon, Dillon Thomas and Correlle Prime each had two hits as the Nuts overcame 16 strikeouts.
Nuts relievers Devin Burke, Trent Daniel and Carasiti combined for 52/3 shutout innings. Daniel (3-3) recorded the win. Starter Zach Jemiola allowed five runs and seven hits, including two homers, in 51/3 innings.
