Kadry on Bowling: Albany bowler Rosprim rules first Modesto USBC Queens tourney

Karen Rosprim was crowned “Queen” in the inaugural Modesto USBC Queens Tournament hosted by Yosemite Lanes last weekend.

Women from throughout California vied for the $2,000 first prize, guaranteed through local community sponsorships.

Each participant bowled six games of qualifying Saturday. The top eight made the cut to the two-game match-play double-elimination finals Sunday. Brittany Hillman was the high qualifier with a 1,517 total, a 253 average. Rosprim was the last to make the cut at 1,387, a 231 average.

Rosprim, bowling out of Albany, won four consecutive matches to advance to the final round. In a close championship match, she defeated Jeanette Adams of Sacramento 436-424. In the final game, Adams was working on a strike in the ninth frame and needed a strike in the 10th with a good count to win. But she came up high, knocking down just seven pins.

Rosprim won $2,000, while Adams earned $1,000. There were five 279s rolled during qualifying and one 278 during match play. Hillman had two 279s and the 278. The other 279s belonged to locals Bonnie Garber, Pam Schaal and Tammy Lewis. ...

Manny Simas topped the men’s prize list in the McHenry Senior No-tap Tournament with his 839 set. David Castro finished second at 833. Taking third at 831 was Larry Bolles. On the ladies’ side, Ginger DeMello led the field with her 832 total. Pam Holly rolled an 813 for second, followed by Mary Eccleston with a 798 series. ...

The Yosemite 50 and Older No-tap Tournament is this Friday at 1 p.m. This is a singles event with separate prize lists for men and women. Check-in begins at 12:30. ...

The July edition of the Yosemite Scratch 6-gamer is Sunday at noon. Check-in starts at 11 a.m. ...

The upcoming weekend is the next to last for competition in the 66th annual Peach Classic at McHenry. This year’s guaranteed prize is $2,500, and tournament officials expected a total prize fund of more than $30,000. There also are high game (men and women), scratch series (men and women) and 10-game prize lists. Squads are at noon, 2:30 p.m. and 5 on Saturday and Sunday. If you’ve wanted to have a say in local bowling issues, now is your chance. The offices of Modesto USBC president, vice president and five directors will be up for election. To serve as president, you must have previously served as vice president, and to serve as vice president, you must have served as a director for at least two years. All positions require membership in the Modesto USBC. Applications are available at either bowling center and are accepted until the meeting date, July 26 at Yosemite at 10 a.m. ...

Entries are out for the 2015 Diddy Watts Youth State Singles Challenge. The tournament rolls at AMF Visalia Lanes on Aug. 1-2 in three divisions: boys scratch, girls scratch and handicap. Qualifying has been held throughout the state, but a last-chance round is set for Aug. 1 at 9 a.m. in Visalia. Walk-ins are welcome. Semifinals will follow at 1 p.m. The top eight entries in each division will advance to the finals Aug. 2, starting at 9 a.m.
