Modesto Nuts’ 15 hits overcome 5 errors in win at Bakersfield
As long as the Modesto Nuts continue to hit like this, committing five errors in a game should settle a little easier at the end of the night – though it probably will be addressed just the same.
The Nuts belted 15 hits Thursday night, their fourth game in a row this week with double digits in hits, and defeated the host Bakersfield Blaze 8-5 in a California League game.
A small announced crowd of 365 at hot Sam Lynn Ballpark watched Modesto leadoff batter Raimel Tapia increase his Cal League hits lead to 118 with a 3-for-5 night that included two doubles and Ryan McMahon increase his league lead in doubles to 29 while blasting his fourth home run in four games.
The hitting barrage led to the Nuts’ second win in a row in the series with the third and final game scheduled for Friday at 7:45 p.m. Modesto returns home Saturday to start a four-game set against Lake Elsinore at John Thurman Field.
McMahon led off Modesto’s three-run fourth with his 11th home run of the season. McMahon’s last three homers have led off an inning. Correlle Prime also scored in the inning on Ashley Graeter’s groundout, and Rosell Herrera scored on a single by Wilson Soriano.
Modesto kept hacking in a four-run fifth that extended its led to 7-2. Tapia led off with his second double of the night and 23rd this season. McMahon singled home Tapia, and Prime greeted Blaze reliever Emilio Pagan with a three-run bomb.
Bakersfield pecked away at the lead, closing to within 7-5 in the seventh, but Modesto tacked on one for good measure in the eighth when Soriano scored on a double-play grounder by Tapia.
McMahon also went 3 for 5, Soriano was 3 for 4, and Prime and Herrera each went 2 for 5.
Winning pitcher Konner Wade (4-6) allowed three runs, eight hits and two walks in six innings, Matt Carasiti pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save, and four Nuts pitchers survived five errors, including McMahon’s 24th and 25th of the season, both on throws.
