Modesto Nuts on wrong side of 1-hitter in loss to San Jose Giants

The Modesto Nuts wasted no time hitting the ball Saturday night when leadoff batter Wilson Soriano belted a line-drive single in the bottom of the first inning. The Nuts then wasted the rest of the game by getting no hits.

San Jose Giants pitchers Chase Johnson (5-3), Christian Jones and Jake Smith combined on a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 2-0 victory over the Nuts at John Thurman Field.

Johnson retired 11 Modesto batters in a row after Soriano’s hit. He walked two and struck out eight over seven innings. Johnson was still around to start a finishing run of 12 consecutive retired hitters after issuing a leadoff walk to Ashley Graeter in the sixth.

An announced crowd of 3,064 saw little hitting. RBI doubles by San Jose’s Angel Villalona in the top of the fourth and Juan Perez in the sixth made the most noise.

The Nuts were coming off a four-game sweep of Inland Empire in which they totaled 43 hits.

Modesto starter Johendi Jiminian (3-8) retired the first 11 Giants hitters, but a two-out error in the fourth set up Villalona’s double.

The second game in the three-game series is Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
